Baryshnikov Arts Center to Present Rocio Molina and Rosario 'La Tremendita' in US Premiere of AFECTOS
Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) will present Rocío Molina and Rosario "La Tremendita" on March 20-22, Thursday through Saturday at 8PM in BAC's Jerome Robbins Theater. The Málaga-born bailaoraand choreographer, who was last seen in New York at the 2010 Flamenco Festival, will perform with the acclaimed flamenco singer the U.S. Premiere of Afectos at BAC, as part of the annual, citywide festival featuring Spain's finest dance and music artists.
Rocío Molina began her professional career in 2001, touring internationally with the Compañía María Pagés as a dancer and choreographer. She has since established herself at the forefront of modern flamenco with an individual style that "embraces contradictions" (The Telegraph) between classical and contemporary forms, and "at once seems to lead an audience into the heart of flamenco at its purest and extend it by making it new" (The New York Times). In 2010, at age 26, Ms. Molina received the National Prize for Dance, the highest distinction to be awarded in the world of art, dance, and culture in Spain.
Afectos is a work conceived by Ms. Molina and cantaora Rosario Guerrera-billed as Rosario "La Tremendita"-who regularly collaborates with the flamenco star, and who has been called a "major asset" to Ms. Molina's work (The New York Times). Joined onstage by bassist Pablo Martín, the fiery dancer and powerful singer create a dynamic interplay between movement and music. Ms. Molina's fierce footwork and fluid arms meet "La Tremendita's" rich voice and percussive clapping, weaving together a series of intimate, emotive vignettes.
Rocio Molina and Rosario "La Tremendita" will perform Afectos (U.S. Premiere) on March 20-22, Thursday through Saturday at 8PM at Baryshnikov Arts Center's Jerome Robbins Theater, located at 450 W. 37th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online or by phone: BACNYC.ORG / 866-811-4111.
