Alphawood Foundation Chicago has granted US $5 million to Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, enabling the company to complete its new headquarters building northwest of Taipei. Cloud Gate suffered a significant set-back in 2008 when its studios, sets, costumes and production archives were destroyed in a fire.

Founded in 1973 by renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-min, Cloud Gate is the premier modern Dance Company in Asia. It regularly performs in the United States, Europe and throughout Asia. Cloud Gate will bring its remarkable imagery and skill to Chicago in March 2014 for two performances of the landmark work "Songs of the Wanderers" at the Auditorium Theatre. The Chicago appearance of Cloud Gate is presented jointly by the Auditorium, the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, and The Joffrey Ballet.

In 2012, Cloud Gate broke ground for the Tamsui Center, its new home. This facility will be the administrative, technical and artistic base for Cloud Gate and will provide exhibition and performance space for other arts organizations in Taiwan. It is the first facility of its kind run by a private non-profit organization in that country.

Alphawood's gift will allow the completion of the project on time and on budget. Cloud Gate is expected to take possession of the new facility in 2015.
