The Next Festival of Emerging Artists Returns to NYC with Guest Jennifer Koh

Founded in 2013 by Artistic Director Peter Askim, TheNext Festival of Emerging Artists is an immersive residency for young (20-30 years old) professional string players focused on musical exploration, entrepreneurial thinking, and contemporary performance practice. This year's fifth anniversary festival takes place May 28-June 10. After a week atMusic Mountain in Falls Village, CT, the festival moves to NYC.

After run-out performances in NYC in 2015 and 2016at (Le) Poisson Rouge, the festival returns to thecity for a series of events in early June. On June 4 atNational Sawdust, the festival orchestra will be joinedby violinist Jennifer Koh for works by Anna Clyne and Caroline Shaw. Closed composer workshops will be heldon June 6-7 with Pulitzer-prize winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis, and a unique series of choreographer/composer/performer workshops with Christopher D'Amboise take place June 8-10.

Comprised of some of the most exciting young artists of tomorrow, The Next Festival of Emerging Artists isan intensive and immersive residency for young professional string players focused on musical exploration,entrepreneurial thinking and contemporary performance practice. Founded by Artistic Director Peter Askimin 2013, the festival provides a setting for the next generation of artists to hone their craft in a beautifulsetting, with generous financial support and the opportunity to collaborate with world class guest artists,including cellist Matt Haimovitz, ETHEL, cellist Jeffrey Zeigler, and violist Nadia Sirota.

Active as a composer, conductor and bassist, PeterAskim is the Artistic Director of the Next Festival ofEmerging Artists and the conductor of the RaleighCivic Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, as well asDirector of Orchestral Activities at North CarolinaState University. He was previously Music Directorand Composer-in-Residence of the Idyllwild ArtsAcademy Orchestra. He has also been a memberof the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and servedon the faculty of the University of Hawaii-Manoa,where he directed the Contemporary MusicEnsemble and taught theory and composition.

A dedicated champion of the music of our time, he has premiered numerous works, including works bycomposers Richard Danielpour, Nico Muhly, Aaron Jay Kernis, Christopher Theofanidis and has collaboratedwith such artists as the Miró String Quartet, Matt Haimovitz, Vijay Iyer, Jeffrey Zeigler, Nadia Sirota, andS? Percussion. As a composer, he has been called a "Modern Master" by The Strad and has had commissionsand performances from such groups as the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Honolulu Symphony and theAmerican Viola Society, as well as by performers such as ETHEL, cellist Jeffrey Zeigler and flutist/conductorRansom Wilson.
Mr. Askim is the founder and Artistic Director of The Next Festival of Emerging Artists, a summer festivalfocused on contemporary music and dedicated to cultivating the next generation of performers andcomposers. He founded the innovative Composer Workshop with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer AaronJay Kernis to foster collaborative relationships between performers and composers.
