Green Space is pleased to offer a diverse roster of new/ emerging artists in May. Fertile Ground will present new work by various artists and Take Root will present an evening of work by Sunhwa Chung/ Ko-Ryo Dance Theater.

TAKE ROOT, now in its 5th season, aids in the continued development and performance of new dance work of various aesthetics by providing choreographers with the opportunity to be produced in a full-length or paired evening of work. This once a month series supports dance makers by providing our venue, Green Space, with full technical and marketing support.

About the Work: Sunhwa Chung/ Ko-Ryo Dance Theater presents a unique, authentic blend of modern and traditional Korean dance, "Life is Every Day: So Close Yet So Far Away" is a glimpse into the dramatic lifestyle changes of transplanted Koreans as they are forced to adapt to foreign cultures. This piece is inspired by real events in the choreographer's own journey of accepting change and embracing new customs.

Choreographer/ Company Biography: Sunhwa Chung is a native Korean and earned M.A. in Dance from American University, Washington, D.C. in 1999. She performed at the Asian Games of 1986 and the Seoul Olympics in 1988. She was awarded a scholarship for emerging choreographers from the Arts Club of Washington, D.C., in 1998 and also was selected as one of the great choreographers for the 16th Annual Choreographers' Showcase by the Maryland Department of Parks and Recreation in 1999. She has performed extensively throughout Korea and Japan and performed both traditional and modern dance at prestigious venues in the United States including the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C., Lincoln Theater, Washington D.C., Dance Place, Washington D.C., Public Playhouse, UMBC Theater, Maryland, American University Experimental Theater, Washington, D.C., Asian American Arts Center, Maryland, and the Korean Embassy, Washington, D.C. She formed Ko-Ryo Dance Theater, in 2001 in New York City.

Ms. Chung has produced and directed several performances of the Ko-Ryo Dance Theater at the Merce Cunningham Studio, the Flamboyan Theater, Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, and Joyce SoHo in New York City. Her choreography has been presented at the Cool New York Dance Festival, La MaMa Moves Dance Blast, and several different venues in New York. Ko-Ryo Dance Theater was invited to perform at the 75th Anniversary Season at Jacob's Pillow in June 2007. In October 2008, Ko-Ryo was invited by the Overseas Korean Foundation to perform at the "Korean Festival" in Seoul, Incheon, Yongin and Kwangju, Korea, and presented by Arirang Television. Ko-Ryo Dance Theater was invited once again by Jacob's Pillow to perform in the Inside/Out series during the 2009 season. Ko-Ryo Dance Theater performed in May 2010 at Dance Place during their celebration of Asian Heritage Month. In 2012, Ms. Chung was invited to Dance Place for the second time and had the 10th Anniversary performance at Dance New Amsterdam for the Artist Residency Program of 2012 in New York City. Ms. Chung has been preparing to tour her company in Seoul and Pusan for their debut performance at Sogang University, Korea, in September, 2014.

FERTILE GROUND is a monthly new works showcase for emerging and established artists now in its 8th season, producing the work of over 50 choreographers each year. This non-curated performance event features five-six choreographers each evening, and includes a post-performance discussion with wine and cheese, moderated by Green Space's Artistic Director, Valerie Green.

DANCE ENTROPY / GREEN SPACE: Dance Entropy Inc. created its company home base, Green Space, in Long Island City, in November 2005. Green Space is a spacious 2000 sq. foot venue housed in a former silk factory with magnificent views overlooking Manhattan. Green Space offers choreographers, dancers and the local community an affordable professional dance rehearsal, class, and performance space in New York City.

DIRECTIONS: By Subway: N, Q, or the 7 to Queensboro Plaza, the first stop outside Manhattan. Take the North pedestrian bridge to the street. Look to your right, you will see Crescent St., turn right on Crescent and walk to 38th Ave. Turn left on 38th Ave. Walk one block to 24th street. Green Space is in the red brick, four-story building. (Approximately a ten-minute walk.)
