Pulitzer Prize Winners Goodwin and Vogel to Speak at Huntington's 'Humanities Forum' 12/6

In conjunction with the Huntington Theatre Company's production of Paula Vogel's A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration, Pulitzer Prize winners playwright Paula Vogel and presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will speak in conversation about the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, race in America, and more at the post-show Humanities Forum on Sunday, December 6.

Paula Vogel's plays include How I Learned to Drive (1998 Pulitzer Prize), The Long Christmas Ride Home, The Mineola Twins, The Baltimore Waltz, Hot ‘n' Throbbing, Desdemona, And Baby Makes Seven, and The Oldest Profession. She is the recipient of two OBIE Awards as well as many others awards, and many fellowships. She is the playwright-in-residence at the Yale Repertory Theatre, as well as an artistic associate at Long Wharf Theatre and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Doris Kearns Goodwin

is a renowned presidential historian and author of numerous books including Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln for which she received numerous prizes, LynDon Johnson and the American Dream; The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga, and No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt (1995 Pulitzer Prize). She has contributed many articles on politics for many leading national publications and serves as a news analyst for NBC.

The Huntington Theatre Company continues its 28th season - a season of American stories - with A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration, an uplifting, moving, and distinctly American holiday play with music. Taking place on Christmas Eve 1864, stories of a collection of characters including President Abraham Lincoln and his wife are woven into an American tapestry, showing us that the gladness of one's heart is the greatest gift of all. This production includes beloved holiday music and will be enhanced by local choirs caroling before each performance. Jessica Thebus directs. Daryl Waters supervised, arranged, and orchestrated holiday music, Negro spirituals, and Civil War ballads, which are integrated into Vogel's script.
