OBERON presents LIVE @ OBERON Music Series

OBERON, the American Repertory Theater's (A.R.T.) Second Stage and club theater venue, will present Live @ OBERON, a new concert series that brings together an eclectic array of musical artists for exceptional original performances OBERON's intimate club theater environment located at 2 Arrow Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge.

THE SILKROAD ENSEMBLE WITH Yo-Yo Ma

Inspired by the exchange of ideas and traditions along the historical Silk Road, cellist Yo-Yo Ma ('76) established Silkroad Ensemble in 1998 to create music that engages difference. Silkroad has been affiliated with Harvard University since 2005, with offices on Harvard's Allston campus since 2010. Through mentorships and workshops, Silkroad acts as a working laboratory at the intersection of the arts and academics, sparking radical cultural collaboration and passion-driven learning among Harvard staff, students, and faculty.

SESSION AMERICANA

Session Americana huddles close to a table wired for sound with suitcase drums, an electric bass, and a pump organ on the perimeter. Comprised of five songwriters and six Boston all-stars sharing lead vocals, you'll never know what's coming next. After ten years of building audiences and winning awards in Boston, the Northeast, and Europe, a performance at 2015's Folk Alliance introduced the band to the national industry, resulting in invitations to showcase at the AMAs, join a national booking agency, perform as the closing act at Sister's Festival, and play Rocky Mountain Folks Fest.

ANCESTRAL MEMORIES

With grant support from the French-American Jazz Exchange Program, Cuban-American saxophonist/percussionist/composer Yosvany Terry and French pianist Baptiste Trotignon present a unique and exciting program inspired by the rich and diverse musical traditions that emerged from the African Diaspora in the United States and former French colonies in the Americas.

Named Ancestral Memories, the project captures the rhythms, melodies, and harmonies of the Caribbean, New Orleans and French Louisiana, re-imagined through 21st century aesthetics and a jazz sensibility. The ensemble also features the extraordinary rhythm section of Terry's brother, bassist Yunior Terry, and drummer Clarence Penn. Ancestral Memories' debut album will be released in October 2017 on OKeh/Sony Records.

Nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album, Yosvany Terry's most recent album New Throned King (5Passion, 2014) was based on a similar concept and seamlessly blended modern jazz with the ceremonial music of the West African and Cuban Arara culture.

LAURA CORTESE & THE DANCE CARDS

Cutting her teeth as a sideman in Boston's roots music scene, Laura Cortese forged a unique path through a pool rich in talent (due to a large population of Berklee School of Music graduates like herself) including stints as an instrumentalist with Band of Horses, Pete Seeger, Rose Cousins, Jocie Adams (of the Low Anthem), and Uncle Earl. Her Compass Records debut, CALIFORNIA CALLING, is the next step in her career as a frontwoman and bandleader - she and her Dance Cards, break new ground with a bold and elegant new album, based in the lyrical rituals of folk music but exploring new territories of rhythm and sonics. With the support of Sam Kassirer, album producer of folk-pop favorites like Lake Street Dive and Joy Kills Sorrow, they've created something that's simultaneously rowdy, delicate and cinematic. This is post-folk that seriously rocks. On their CD release tour, cellist Valerie Thompson (cello/vox), fiddler Jenna Moynihan (fiddle/vox), and Zoe Guigueno (bass/vox) pair their sophisticated string arrangements and rich vocal harmonies to band leader Laura Cortese's poignant and powerful singing.

Moe Pope and The Arcitype are STL GLD, one of the New England area's most exciting acts. The Emcee/Producer duo has been nominated for Boston Music Award's Best Hip Hop Act for the past two years and has been called one of the best live acts from the city of Boston. For nine years running, The Sweetback Sisters have been selling out theaters across the Northeast with their signature take on the holiday sing-along: The Sweetback Sisters' Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular. This wildly popular show, back for its second year at OBERON, requires a bit of audience participation and a love for all genres of holiday music (Fear not! Songbooks are provided). Add in a healthy dose of trivia, prizes, and matching outfits and we think it's safe to say you've got yourself a bona fide spectacular!

The Sweetback Sisters Emily Miller and Zara Bode may not be blood relations, but their precise, family-style harmonies recall the best of rock and country music from the 1950s and '60s. Together with their fine band of brothers, The Sweetback Sisters carry the torch of country music's finest golden era performers. For this show, the girls bring their signature mix of modern nostalgia to the old holiday songs we all know and love.
