Boise Contemporary Theater is holding a fundraising event on April 25, 2016 from 7- 9 pm called BCT Theater Lab Backstage Pass: A Night of Celebration and Support of BCT's Programs for Young Artists and Audiences. This "FUNraiser" invites the public to come discover what happens behind the scenes of BCT's acclaimed programs for youth, including Theater Lab and the Children's Reading Series.

BCT's programs for youth are designed to be both fun and engaging for participants, and also to delve deeper into what it means to be a successful and engaged citizen in today's world. Participants in Theater Lab learn how to deal with different kinds of issues, understand diverse points of views and backgrounds, and work productively and supportively within a team and structure. They develop creative and critical thinking, writing, listening and communication skills, and learn to confront and dissent current topics with compassion, humor and originality. Their team journey results in powerful, original pieces that provide a unique and courageous perspective on current affairs. Students gain confidence and leadership skills as they present their pieces as professional productions on the BCT Mainstage. Similarly, audiences to the Children's Reading Series strengthen listening and observational skills, deepen their understanding of the nature of stories and story structure, engage their imaginations, broaden their comprehension of more sophisticated topics, and share in the collective emotional experience of theater.

Backstage Pass begins at 7 pm in the BCT lobby with heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks, and then invites participants to walk through the BCT classrooms and learn first-hand from BCT educators, including Education Director Dwayne Blackaller and current Theater Lab teachers, how they work with local youth to conceive, write, design and perform as a group original works that are then professionally presented on the BCT Mainstage. The evening culminates inside the BCT Mainstage with performance excerpts from the current BCT Theater Lab Spring Session participants. The evening ends around 9 pm, and participants will have the chance to give an additional contribution at that time.

Funds raised through Backstage Pass will go directly into BCT's programs for youth, helping to support the next generation of leaders, writers, artists, inventors and storytellers.

Backstage Pass tickets are $50 and include food, drink and entertainment. Tickets can be purchased through the BCT Box Office at (208) 331-9224 x205, or in person at 854 Fulton Street in downtown Boise during Box Office hours, Monday through Friday 10 am to 2 pm and two hours prior to every performance. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.bctheater.org/events/backstage_pass.

BCT Theater Lab fills the BCT classrooms each season with multitudes of talented youth who concept, create, and professionally present an original theatrical piece on the BCT Mainstage. BCT Theater Lab is an after-school theater program dedicated to bringing artistic and educational opportunities not offered in schools, or elsewhere in the community, to school- aged youth ages 6-18. Taught by professional writers and theater artists, a diverse group of students work as an ensemble to conceive, compose, and perform new works for the stage. The classes focus on creative brainstorming, devising, composition, playwriting, acting, contemporary movement, and voice training.

The Children's Reading Series (CRS) is a beloved BCT program that presents the best of contemporary children's theater in a creative environment that is accessible to audience members of all ages. Drawing on one of the oldest traditions in theater, "hearing a play", audience members will experience professional actors bringing engaging stories to life. BCT's Children's Reading Series is directed by the very talented Dwayne Blackaller.
