I love both IN THE HEIGHTS & PASSING STRANGE...I agree yankee! there's no need to bash one show to show your devotion to another show.
YES! I love XANADU too... I am not bashing it... really! I am just being realistic! by saying I dont think it will win the TONYS, but NEVER NEVER I said that its a bad show!
For me... I just felt like it's been a really long time since we've had a show that's bursting with energy and so full of life the way In The Heights is. In The Heights celebrates a community of people who care for and about each other, and IMO, does so without an overdone sugarcoat or ignoring the reality of hardship. In a few words, it has a big heart -- and there are not enough of those anymore. I hope they win Best Musical tomorrow.

Emcee,
I wont even ATTEMPT to say it better !!! BRAVO !!!
Just for some comic relief... can you tell us why you think the book "blows" ? When you make comments like this one, but dont explain your reasoning, the assumption (at least by me) is that you didnt see the show.
Can you please explain why you think the book is so bad?

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...
"Every day has the potential to be the greatest day of your life." - Lin-Manuel Miranda
"And when Idina Menzel is singing, I'm always slightly worried that her teeth are going to jump out of her mouth and chase me." - Schmerg_the_Impaler
Their lottery is pretty impossible. I'm 0 for 4, I think.

Well, what Emmcee says means it makes a good topic for a show. Yet, I don't really connect to the score of ITH and even less to the one of Passing Strange which has so ridiculously bland lyrics (the ones of ITH are a little better). Similary about the music. So unless the books are really strong... Then on the other hand, it's no strong season.
That quote alone is reminding me of my first read through of Guys and Dolls with the star who had never seen a musical. LOL.

You're going to the show with me, emcee. We *will* win the lotto someday. And we can give the holla holla guys the standing ovation they deserve.
I'm not going to get into this discussion, but TooDarnHot, watch it with the Telemundo remarks. Not all telenovelas are cheesy and/or awful, not even that over the top. Regardless, ITH is hardly like a telenovela, and it's such an obvious/lame comparison to make, which imo is completely off the mark. What in ITH is melodramatic or over the top? Characters don't die in other musicals? Take the exact same storyline with white people (or any other ethnicity), and I doubt you'd call it a soap opera.
