Posted: 3/6/06 at 6:50pmDoes anyone know if the "You're a good man charlie brown" cast recording worth buying? I have heard good things and bad things. Most things are about how bad Lucy is, but I wanted to check with you guys as ya'll are the people to ask.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 6:51pmI like it. There are many better recordings, but I think it is a cute thing to have. Nothing amazing. I don't mind Lucy so much, it's in her character.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 8:16pmYeah, I find it fun, too. Sure, it's not amazingly beautiful vocals for many of the characters, but that's not the point, so it works. It's also a good resource for some cute kid-friendly songs.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 8:24pmI really like mine. The voices aren't supposed to sound professional, these people are playing kids, and the voices are supposed to match thier character.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 8:37pmAnd we know that many of these performers are truly capable of professional and beautiful singing (Anthony Rapp, Kristin Chenoweth, and others) which, in a way, makes their kid-voices even more entertaining!

Posted: 3/6/06 at 9:06pmYes, Lucy is supposed to sound obnoxious, particularly in that first number of hers when she sings to Schroeder ("I think the way you play the piaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaano is nice.").

Posted: 3/6/06 at 9:36pmI just bought mine a month ago, and my kids love it! (Although I do have to skip the Schroeder song....yikes!) What totally surprised me was when I found out that Roger Bart played Snoopy. When I first listened to it (without looking at the booklet), I kept thinking...'this guy sounds familiar', but I couldn't place the voice. I knew him from Desperate Housewives and had no idea that he could sing. (pathetic, I know!) I absolutely LOVE his singing of "Suppertime". He is, by far, my favorite on that CD! My 14 AND my 6 year old both love to sing "My Philosophy" around the house. It's quite amusing...though my husband disagrees! So, all that to say...go buy the CD!

Posted: 3/6/06 at 10:34pmThis CD is worth buying not only for the perfect Charlie Brown of Anthony Rapp, but for Kristin Chenoweth's brilliant Tony winning "My New Philosophy" and (my personal favorite) Roger Bart's adorable Tony winning "Supper Time".

How could you not be familiar with the very talented, extra cute, and super sweet Roger Bart? 
He's not just a psycho pharmacist - he's also wonderful at playing a dog.

I have both the OBC and Revival cast, and although I have much respect for the OBC cast, I do love the Revival. Anthony Rapp is genuinely pathetic, as Charlie Brown should be, and you find yourselves going, "awww" after every song of his. B.D. Wong is wonderful, Kristin is one of the best performers ever (she can pull off as a seven-year-old until she dies), Stanley Wayne Mathis is a GREAT Shroeder (he brings together the jazz and the classical into one), and Ilana is great, not because of her voice, but because of the character she puts into it.
And of course Roger Bart is my hero. He is probably why you should buy this CD. He cute, cute, cute!!

Posted: 3/7/06 at 7:34amOn a side note, it says that Kenny Brescia (one of the original guitarists from Rent) plays guitar especially for the recording, but I don't hear any, though. Could anyone tell me what tracks to listen to if you know where to hear Brescia?

I actually saw the original cast in 1968 - Gary Burghoff, Bob Balaban (when they both had hair), the late Bill Hinnant as Snoopy, etc. The big difference was that they did not try to "play children". No funny voices, no lisps. They talked and sang exactly the same as if they were playing adults. It was a 200 seat theatre (80 St. Marks) with no amplification, two musicians. No elaborate sets - just some colorful building block units.

The original off-Broadwway cast recording is near-perfection, exactly what Charles Schulz onstage should be. The Broadway revival recording (I did not see the production, so I am only speaking about the recording) is unlistenable, IMHO, and I donated it to the thrift shop after one hearing. A total abomination, with Lippa's contributions almost destructive.
Not that I have an opinion about this or anything.

Heh. Somehow, "The Doctor Is In" ended up on my iPod. It randomly came up the other day on the subway when I had it one full volume. When Lucy sings "You HAAAAAAAAAAAVE the distinction to be..." I thought my eardrums were going to crack.
But I like both recordings.

Posted: 3/7/06 at 3:28pmI love both of the Lippa songs. They fit in with the new orchestrations, but of course if you ONLY like the original, then they would sound weird. In context with the rest, however, they are delightful. And "Beethoven Day" is so clever, with all of the little Beethoven bits underscoring.

The production was as overblown as the music. They had a huge sofa that Lucy and Linus sat on. They had graphics for Snoopy's Red Baron number.
The original has Reva Rose as Lucy, a very gifted commedienne.

Reva Rose was in about a thousand TV commercials in the 1970's. Usually a housewife in a detergent commercial.
Not to be confused with Reva Rice, who was in Starlight Express.

Posted: 3/7/06 at 7:08pmI still enjoy listening to the YAGMCB cd, even after all these years. I loved the revival, and saw the show several times. I think that the show was so well-cast. Loved them all, especially B.D. Wong.
