Lately, I've been reading many articles about Brooke Shields as Roxie, and I'm seeing more and more in the articles - Brooke being called a Broadway veteran. Though - I feel she hasn't been accepted in musicals until her run as Ruth in Wonderful Town last year, where she got rave reviews. Some of you might be suprised to find out she has plenty of other stage credits besides Grease, Cabaret, WT, and now Chicago.
Here are her credits
Suzanne in The Eden Cinema 1986 (Off Broadway) Melissa Gardner in Love Letteres 1992 (Los Angeles) Betty Rizzo in Grease 1994 (The National Tour) Betty Rizzo in Grease 1995 (Broadway) Performer in The Vagina Monologues 2001 (Los Angeles) Sally Bowles in Cabaret 2001 (Broadway) Perofmrer in The Exonerated 2003 (Off Broadway) Ruth Sherwood in Wonderful Town 2004 (Broadway) Roxie Hart in Chicago 2005 (Westend) Roxie Hart in Chicago 2005 (Broadway)
Personally, I feel now she is a stage veteran. And she had made great strides in Musical Theatre - working hard to gain "triple threat" status. This woman really needs to create some roles!
Personally...to see her succeed in an original role...I think one would have to write a role and craft it specifically for her. That way it's something that she can work with and really master.

Brooke Shields was a child model, and became a "super-nova model" and household name at the ripe old age of 10 or 11. She was virtually on the cover of EVERY magazine wherever you looked. She quickly transitioned into film work... but with lousy reviews. She has slowly worked her way up as an actress and performer, and is regularly praised now for her efforts and star quality on stage and TV (primarily). Her biggest films to date are probably "Pretty Baby" and "The Blue Lagoon." She had a hit TV show a few years ago: "Suddenly Susan." She's been a celebrity for close to 30 years already, and she's not that old.

I think she will finally gain the title once she creates a role on Broadway/West End. There's still some people that refuse to credit her as a Broadway veteran.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I don't think so, she just replaced people. She hasn't originated, but she wants to.
When the news articles say "a stage vet" they're saying that she's a pro at this.
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"
"Depends on whether your criteria for "veteran" is experience or quality of work. I can't tell from what you just said."
I must agree with best12bars. I'd think in this case "veteran" refers to her experience performing on Broadway. I DID actually see her in Grease but she was ok but not mindblowing by any stretch...

"You really just love money and power and capitalism? You know they're never going to love you back."
"Things happen for the best...I don't even believe that myself."
We went to NEW LINCOLN together and she is a great person. The woman has had it all and she deserves it all. Raises glass in her honor. And hope she has another baby soon. You go Brooke!

Grease was her first big stage role, and she has improved tenfold since then. I've seen (somewhat by chance) all her Broadway roles, and her Ruth Sherwood (obviously her Broadway "triumph" thus far) was magnificent. I haven't seen Chicago yet, but I don't think her in a musical is "stunt casting" anymore (with Grease, it was). She is clearly taking her theatre roles very seriously, and putting forth the time and effort needed to do them well. I give her credit for dancing Roxie (based on what I've read) using the same steps Ann Reinking did, as opposed to other stars (read: Melanie Griffith) who kind of pranced around looking cute.
I want her to originate a role as well. Brooke is a goddess!!! She was just amazing in "Wonderful Town" the same critics that claimed "their heart sank when they heard about her taking over a role created by Donna Murphy" went to call her a "Delight".
