What are some of the final performances by actors in a broadway role before their death or before retirement (or perhaps just by people who haven't come back yet after a long time)?

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

George C. Scott took ill during a performance of INHERIT THE WIND (that was the play wasn't it?), a production of Tony Randall's American Actors Theater (is that what it was called?) When Scott took ill, Randall raced down from the balcony where he had been and took over for Scott during the performance. Mr. Scott died not long after.

Pearl Bailey "retired" from show business to be a fulltime Ambassador of Love as appointed by President Gerald Ford. She gave her "farewell to showbiz" performance in her Broadway revival of HELLO DOLLY!'s last performance. I was there for that "farewell" performance. It was amazing, unforgettable, extraordinary and all sorts of other adjectives. :)
