I also saw the original with George C. Scott and saw it again when Robert Preston took over the part. Mr. Scott played the part heavy, dragging out all his lines. Robert Prerston was wonderful, and very funny in the role. If I rember correctly, the playing time of the show was 15 or 20 minutes shorter when Robert Preston was doing the show because he kept the pace of the show at lightning speed, Mr Scott on the other hand had no comic timing which influenced everbody elses timing as well.

I have never seen the original but I am looking forward to seeing this. I love Richard Dreyfuss.

mcgilh- many would disagree with you about the material. What exactly makes it "dated?" A play doesn't have to take place in modern times for it to be relevant. Obviously it didn't appeal to you for some reason but do explain your definition of "dated." You do realize it was written in the 70's and is based off the play Volpone?
I just saw this production last night, and it was great. Funny and fun, and the cast had wonderful chemistry.
I waited backstage to get some autographs, and most of the cast was very accomadating- particularly Bob Dishy and Eric Stoltz, who were both really friendly. They told me that Larry Gelbart has been here giving them new material.
Richard Dreyfus wouldn't give an autograph, but he was wonderful in the show. He and Eric Stoltz had a terrific father/son relationship going on, and Bob Dishy and Rene Auberjoiner and Bronson Pinchot just about walked away with the show comic wise.
The sets and costumes were all superb, all in all it was a great night in the theatre!
