Honestly kinda jealous. It’s surprising that British audiences eat up these stories, the shows are wildly entertaining but all fluff. I guess Heathers is darker than Mean Girls (I always wished Tina Fey would have made the getting hit by a bus moment a bit darker, she makes it such a light moment). I can’t imagine both shows running on Broadway - and Heathers was labeled as “off-Broadway”.
I would assume most people would say Heathers is the better show but since it’s an older movie maybe less commercially viable? Both are huge in schools though. I didn’t know there was a pro-shot of the UK Heathers, is it any good?
I just watched the Mean Girls movie musical on Paramount Plus and thought it was ok, some of the choices were a little off to me but it did well at the box office! Was thinking I would love a Heathers movie musical.
Is the filmed “Heathers” any good? I mean, it’s filmed well but the problem is what they were filming is one of the worst pieces of trash to ever be put on a stage.
The Heathers pro-shot is a decent representation of the show. But it lacks the zazz of the Off-Broadway production. They made some changes to the score that I don't love. And it was already a lumpy score.
I saw a local production of it a few years ago and was totally blown away by the show and its cast. They had also done a production of Zanna Don’t that was amazing. I’m surprised more youth theatres don’t do Zanna Don’t actually.
I think Zanna Don't's plot (straight kids are discriminated against so they turn the gay kids straight) wouldn't play well today. The conversation about sexuality has shifted and Zanna's satire could read tone deaf today.
No, I hate it with a BURNING passion. They took one of (if not THE) greatest black comedy ever made and turned it into a something for middle schoolers.
I love Heathers as a show and I think it really tackled some interesting themes, but I saw it before the movie and after watching the movie I can say they're definitely different approaches to the same story. The Broadway Breakdown podcast did an episode kind of cataloging the changes they made and how it didn't really live up to the movie. But as a standalone piece I thought it was one of the better "high school shows" for sure.
I think Mean Girls is a better show, personally. I'm not sure where the assumption that Heathers is the better show came from. Once was enough. But I'd consider seeing Mean Girls again, although I haven't brought myself to buying a ticket for it.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
From what I have seen of the London production of "HEATHERS", I much prefer the off-Broadway production. And luckily I got to see it a number of times.
