The newly reimagined production of The Who's Tommy, which had a sold-out run at Chicago's Goodman Theatre this past summer, has announced a spring 2024 Broadway bow. The rock musical will open March 28, 2024 at the Nederlander Theatre, with previews to begin March 8.

So between this, Spamalot, The Wiz, Cabaret, (and potentially Gutenberg and Here Lies Love), revival is going to be a SMACKDOWN this year…

So we have more revivals this year than last year

That will really depend on eligibility decisions.

Last season saw six musical revivals: Bob Fosse's Dancin’, Camelot, Into the Woods, Parade, Sweeney Todd, and 1776

This season, there are currently five surefire musical revivals: Cabaret, Merrily We Roll Along, Spamalot, The Wiz, and The Who’s Tommy.

If Gutenberg and Here Lies Love are deemed revivals, then that will bring it up to seven. I personally think they’ll probably be considered as original musicals, but we shall see!

Here Lies Love will not be considered in the revival caragory

I personally don't foresee this toppling Merrily for that Best Revival award, but this is going to sweep the design categories  considering Here Lies Love will most likely be long gone. Expecting Best Scenic and Lighting to pretty much be in the bag for Tommy.

Then again, I could be wrong! Exciting stuff.

Wouldn’t it fall under the 2002 “classics” rule though since it had major productions in NYC and elsewhere?

Back to the Future is supposedly strong in the scenic and lighting category.

The talk is that Boop is taking the Shubert in the spring; the out-of-town ends in December.

Is the cast from the Goodman expected to transfer? I feel like they need a star for this one...

Their lead is on tour with Company, which doesn't mean they couldn't get out of their contract for Broadway, but yeah, I think they'd want some seasoned Broadway vets in this to inspire ticket sales.

I am absolutely thrilled Adam Jacobs, Alison Luff, Bobby Conte, and Nathan Lucrezio are coming back to Broadway.

"Seasoned Broadway vets" and "stars" are two very different things. I would think for a show like this (which doesn't really have a traditional star vehicle role) they're casting the best people possible for the role –– whether they did it in Chicago or not –– and hoping the show sells on the strength of the title, the music, the reviews, and Pete doing some press. Hoping being the key word. laugh

Excited to see this show & score back on Broadway.

I'm super excited about this. I remember seeing it last time it was on Broadway and was blown away.

Welcome back........

Is Alison confirmed or are you just assuming? I know she’s pregnant currently, but I certainly hope she returns to broadway.

Adam Jacobs is also Chicago based. Not saying any of them won’t do it but I’d assume no one is a lock just yet.

and I truly don’t understand the love for this show. It was so strange and I just didn’t care for any of it. But Yolo!

Looks like this show ends Nederlander's relationship with Ticketmaster. Amex presale going on now through Broadway Direct:

I didn’t know she was pregnant… congrats!

I was assuming the entire Chicago cast would transfer. And supposedly Ali is leaving Company to play the title role.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, this may be the first ever Broadway revival of any jukebox musical. 2016’s Motown was a remount as it had not been three years since the original production closed.

Tommy isn't a jukebox musical. It's music was written specifically for this story (adapted from a film and album? Sure. But it's not cobbling together a bunch of different songs from The Who to make a new story).

Not if it closes in March. Every year there's a well-reviewed revival in the fall that everyone assumes is the one to beat (Into the Woods, Follies, Caroline or Change, etc.) that then closes and something else comes along and wins. Remember, no closed show has ever won Best Revival of a Musical and with a bunch of presumably acclaimed revivals still running in June, seems very unlikely this year would break the trend.

The sets were quite basic. The rumor was that the show was built to tour and the set seemed to be the kind of set that toured. Most set pieces were rolled on our dropped down from the flies. The lighting, however, was really marvelous. Expressionistic, unique and beautiful.

The audiences were FILLED with The Who and Pete Townsend fanatics so I don't think producers think they need a star to sell the show... rightly or wrongly. The cast in Chicago was really wonderful except a fairly stiff Adam Jacobs (who still did a fine job).

Jesus saves. I spend.
