“He’s an actor on Broadway.  I broke up with him in December because he couldn’t manage his anger.  He’d scream at me on subway platforms.  Once he busted my lip while trying to grab something out of my hand.  That was when I finally ended it.  But he called me on New Year’s Eve and asked if he could go to a party with me.  We’d bought our tickets months earlier.  They were expensive so I agreed.  My sister was coming with us so I wasn’t worried.  Everyone had a great time.  …At the end of the night, we dropped off my sister and went back to his place.  I was so drunk that I curled up in a pile of clothes.  When I opened my eyes he was taking photos of me and laughing.  I immediately decided to leave.  It was literally the start of a new year and I wanted to begin on a good note.  He yelled at me to come back but I kept walking.  He followed me down the stairs and grabbed my arm.  He told me to ‘stop acting stupid.’  Then he pinned me up against the side of his building.  He was choking me and saying ‘calm down, calm down, calm down.’  A van drove by and started honking at us.  But they didn’t stop.  They didn’t help me.  I broke free and ran into traffic but nobody was stopping.  He caught me, and pushed me up against a van, and lifted me into the air by the neck.  When I woke up on the ground he was gone.  I asked the judge to sentence him to anger management cours

Open speculation like that would be wildly dangerous.

I'm hoping people can respect the anonymity that this woman clearly wishes/needs to keep.

I've never heard of this website, I'm not saying she's lying but since it's anonymous isn't there a chance this is just bs?

It seems awfully passive aggressive to talk about it in this manner.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Her first mistake was saying yes to him attending the party with her. In my opinion, the price of the tickets would not matter had I endured what she said she had. She could have gotten someone else to go. She evidentally had the tickets in her possesion. As drunk as she says she was, she was also evidentally coherent enough to decide to go back to his place and remember the details.

With that said, we have all made bad decisions. JMO

uncageg, get the f out of here with your victim blaming. the issue lies with the abuser, not the abused. stop telling women not to get hurt and start telling men not to hurt.

It's an extremely well known and highly regarded photojournalism blog, featured prominently on Facebook. The photographer released a coffee table book at the end of last year. There's always the chance that his subjects are lying, but, if that is the case, it would fall squarely on the subject and not the website. But I have faith in his work with his subjects.

Also, from my understanding he approaches people and ask them their story, I could be mistaken, but I don't think you can just contact him and request to be on the site...

Well, I'm glad it only took like six posts for someone to victim blame. Disgusting.

She wanted him to be ANONYMOUS for a reason.  Stop digging.

Well sorry to offend, but she is an adult. She made choices. She stayed with him and let him abuse her. I am not blaming her for "what" he did to her I am just saying that she made the choices she did. Yes, he was TOTALLY wrong. Totally.

I was very close to a relationship exactly like this. For a long time. He had anger issues and she stayed. She had chances to just leave but didn't. There are reasons a lot of us may not understand as to why a person will stay in such a relationship. I myself had counseling over it because it happened right in my home. And I have seen it happen in reverse and in same sex relationships. I should have added this to my first post.

"She stayed with him and let him abuse her."

Let's fix what you people wrote right now... "This guy is a flaming piece of dog **** who deserves to have his balls chopped off and shoved down his throat. This woman deserves nothing but our thanks and praise for ensuring he ended up in a courtroom."

Seriously, be better...

Exactly. She also obviously wants to remain anonymous, hence the reason that her post doesn't even show her face...

So if this guy just goes up to random people on the street everything they say is true? If he interviewed me I could literally say whatever story I wanted and he would just post it? Does he fact check this stuff before posting? I don't think it's being unreasonable to think that there is a chance that this is bs. I'm not denying that the actor is a piece of garbage if this is all true but there are no facts here.

I don't deny that violence (domestic and otherwise) exists.  I have been the recipient of both a queer bashing, and a bashing from the man I thought loved me.  I survived.  It's a part of my past that I don't dwell on.

But there is something about this story that just doesn't ring true to me

He photographed me for the website several years ago. It wasn't for any serious situation, it was about what I was wearing. I think he became more interesting since then.

Well... no, he doesn't fact check because that would be nigh impossible. The point of Humans of New York is to get a glimpse into the lives of everyday New Yorkers on the street.

While the stories could all be total fabrications, it's weird that that's the angle you're going after for a *story about abuse* that is not being put out to ruin the abuser's professional reputation. Why the hell would an anonymous woman say she was physically abused?

Given that 24 people per minute are victims of domestic violence in this country yet 70% of cases go unreported and less than 5% of those reported are falsified, you don't get to blame the victim.

This situation calls for a response of "Thank you for being brave enough to report your abuse and ensuring he was put in front of a judge."

Any other response is partly responsible for that 70% stat.

This story seems a bit too unrealistic for me. I've seen New Yorkers and tourists get involved when something bad is happening. The fact that she ran into traffic with a man chasing her and nobody stopped or did anything? She was also passed out on the ground for how long? Nobody helped her? It's my opinion but this sounds like a made up story to me.

Yeah, I never said I'm blaming the victim and I don't blame the victim because I don't believe this even happened.
