It sure has been a crowded season, but I'm not sure it's been a good one.

I agree. When you look at this season vs last year and even the year before I would say it is weaker. Last season was incredible. This season.....I'm struggling to fill my 7 slots with shows I actually want to see
It's really a testament to what an embarrassment of riches the past few years have been, at least for good musicals, that this one feels thin to me despite all the new work. I will admit it's a more interesting season for new plays than we've had in a while! If only people would see them.
Not understanding people saying that this is a bad year for new musicals, especially compared to last year.
Last year we had Hamilton and then a bunch of shows that people were mixed on. Sure some people liked American Psycho and Bright Star but not enough people.
This year we have a very competitive race for Best Musical between three shows (CFA, DEH and Great Comet) where all three are pretty much equally appreciated by critics and theatre fans. Then outside of that we have shows like Anastasia and Groundhog Day which any other year would probably be locks for a nomination and now will have to fight it out.
Sure there are more complete duds this year but that's just because there's more shows in general. More good ones and more bad ones.
