It's not even that it's boring...it's just weird. The voiceover is almost creepy and unsettling. Does not compel me in the slightest to buy tickets (even though I am actually very interested in this production).
I personally love the ultra-minimalism of it. Certainly stands out from practically all other commercials.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
1) The commercial is in no way necessary. Consider it a gift to local network television stations.
2) What would you put in a commercial of a show that doesn't open for several months and has no photos, videos, or audio recording of the cast to feature?

Commercials are necessary, I'm not going to argue about the need for them.
That's the whole point. Get some photos, videos, and/or audio recording of the cast. Willy Wonka has been running commercials for a good 3-5 months without the cast even having been completely announced. Bette was announced almost a year ago - I don't see why they can't at least get a picture of her in the iconic dress for the commercial and have her go "Hello, Dolly!" for the cameras.
Caption: Every so often there was a rare moment of perfect balance when I soared above him.
I think they're trying to avoid the typical campaign and are just doing build-up buzz. They'll probably be a big splashy commercial/print ads with Bette's face soon enough, but for a teaser commercial they're being ultra minimal and are saying they don't need to say anything because "Bette Middler. Hello, Dolly! Duh!"
Yeah, now that I saw the commercial, I want a refund for my tickets... considering there isn't a single available seat for that day, I hope Telecharge will take them back!
