Hi there! I recently watched The Entertainer and thoroughly enjoyed it. General audience/critic's opinions are that the show will not translate well for young people. I'm 22 and thought it was wonderful!
In all honesty, it is quite slow-moving and not particularly revolutionary - but Osborne does raise some pertinent questions about race in society nowadays. Kenneth Branagh and Gawn Grainger give some amazing performances and the set is beautiful. I would recommend if you enjoy very straight plays!
Would also recommend The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, Dreamgirls, Matilda and Murder Ballad! Hope this helps :)
Saw this via the cinema link - very mixed response to it and crowd far less than the winters tale or R&J at the same cinema
For some reason the sound was out of sync and the actual picture certainly not HD quality - they had also decided to film via one camera shot and while moved slightly and in at times there were no close ups and was a bit like watching from the upper circle back row as they kept it wide stage shot most of the time. Some didn't return for the second act not just due to the picture but the very dated play and while KB shone in his role the others fared less well either due to the dated dialogue or just they way they were performing - a lot of shouting - the daughter was dreadful but may well be down to the dated style.
They did a wonderful job making the Garrick look rather grand and the stage very large with a superb set and lighting which went from living room to on stage in seconds - glad that KB took the risk and did the year long season and did three via live link - petty that they didnt quite hit the mark
