I've really been getting into the original recording lately from 2013, especially with the help of genius.com (the lyrics to which composer/lyricist Dave Malloy added annotations about 2 weeks ago). When I first heard the recording I thought it was very strange and didn't attempt to listen to it again until last October and within the last few weeks I've been listening repeatedly. The cast for the upcoming Broadway production is mostly the same, with only Josh Groban, Denée Benton and a few others replacing the original off-Broadway cast. Especially with internationally beloved recording star Josh Groban, does anyone think they may go the Fun Home route and just have the new stars record their songs, slap a new cover on it and call it good? It seems like it would especially behoove the production to release an album with Groban.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
I suspect a whole new recording as well....Between Groban and Denee that covers an awful lot that would need to be recorded.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
With Josh Groban involved I don't see why they wouldn't just release an all new recording. If they've made any significant changes to the score or written new songs it may not be possible to just drop in new vocals over the original recordings.
There is also some new material, including a big solo for Pierre, so I imagine that most, if not all of the show will be recorded. Almost every track features Natasha or Pierre, so it would probably be easier to just record a brand new CD.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I guess I didn't realize that it really is almost every track that features either of the two title characters (I think it's like 3 songs that wouldn't need to be rerecorded). Totally different situation than Emily Skeggs, having been in only a few tracks, now that I'm thinking about it. I'm still having trouble imagining Groban singing the part, probably just because Malloy's voice is so different.

Yeah, I mean, I can only imagine it being a whole new recording since, as you say, Groban's voice is totally different from Malloy's, so it really will be a whole new kind of Pierre. And if they do make a new recording, it will be a really interesting comparison between the original off-Broadway versions of his songs and the Broadway versions...The duel in particular seems to me a difficult thing to imagine Groban singing (without blowing out his vocal cords), as well as the scene towards the end where he confronts Anatole.

"Thank you for the info! I was fortunate to have seen the show last week and really enjoyed it and much of the music. Since I don't live in NY and was not able to catch it off-broadway, I was hoping for a soundtrack that would most closely commemorate my experience - if for no other reason than the sentimental value
