it seems like Riedel has given up, doesn't it? This is the craziest time of year, with road voters in town (I remember during the Wicked / Avenue Q year, he had tons of stuff about the league voters leaning towards Ave Q)- His lack of stories this year is just odd.
I don't get the negative feedback on this particular story though. It's pertinent to Broadway, gives some emotional context to what otherwise would be a simple real estate listing, and IS kind of important to theater-minded folks, much more so than the everyday rumor-mongering about who's cast in what.

Maybe there are no stories to tell. Or at least nothing juicy. We all have predicted pretty lift how things are going to turn out at this year's Tonys. Just my thoughts.

So much THIS. It is an important theater related article.
Sorry, but besides an interesting human interest story, during the busiest time of year in the theatre industry, I don't see how it trumps actual theatre news (and I find it really hard to believe that there are no news stories). Can you imagine a film columnist in the weeks prior to the oscars having an article about saving a house (even the house of a film legend?) - he gets 2 columns a week- his lack of articles of substance is speaking volumes to me-
There are a number of stories that Riedel can focus on- Alex Brightmans significant absences, speculation on Hello Dolly, the ATG story- those are just 3 that come to mind, all of which haven't been explored by him and that IMHO are more interesting than the house piece
It's entirely possible that he has another story in the works but due to a delay or something they ran this piece which admittedly does feel like it was pulled out of a drawer.
That could most certainly be correct- will be interesting to see if tomorrow there is something of worth or if he will speculate on what dresses Anna Wintour is picking out for people again
There is a germ of an interesting piece here, but it typifies Riedel's sophomoric and lazy writing habits - where is the history of the house? How and when did Hammerstein acquire it? How and why did it leave the family's ownership (there are descendants around, why not ask them)? Why not get a quote from Ted Chapin about it?
But you can't really blame the little guy for being a sloppy, lazy writer - I doubt that he gets paid even as much as a good corporate administrative assistant.
