Best Revival of a Musical Best Lead Actress in a Musical (Cynthia Erivo) Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Danielle Brooks/Jennifer Hudson) Best Direction of a Musical (John Doyle) Best Orchestrations (Joseph Joubert)
Are revivals eligible for orchestrations, Jeffrey? There's a ton of new material, so it makes sense - but I'm just not sure about the rules.
I think scenic design for the show is a possible nominee too, along with a Featured Actor nod for Isaiah Johnson. It's also possible (though unlikely, given the sheer competition in the category) that Hudson and Brooks are both nominated for Featured Actress.

In terms of design, I hope it gets a nomination for lighting design.
The original production got 11 nominations. This production will not reach that number - mainly because of HAMILTON and because it's not eligible for book and score.
The orchestrations for this production were SO bad. I'd be disappointed if it got nominated for them. The orchestra sounded SO thin and so synthesized.
Disagree wholeheartedly. Found the new orchestrations to be miles better than the original. Cleaner and more dramatically effective. They allowed the orchestra to be a true support system for the actors, rather than overwhelm them. Joubert's work was fantastic and I hope he gets nominated.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
Of course a revival's orchestrations are eligible if they are new orchestrations. One strange case was when Tunick was nominated for his PROMISES, PROMISES orchestrations, although he orchestrated the original, the revival had a few songs added in.
I think the TCP orchestrations are great, extremely imitate and perfectly matched to the production. A tad synthesizer heavy at certain times, but there is so much good to override it.

There is ZERO synthesized music. And if you knew the direction the show is going. The thin more natural, non over instrumented sound is what was being sought. The Orchestrations in this show are gorgeous. And a lot more noticeable than the original.
Well, that kind of thing doesn't happen very often.... Chicago's revival didn't have the same number, and yet it's the most successful revival on Broadway. However Cabaret's revival did earn the same number of nominations. Then again, do we really want to compare TCP to such B'way classics. I'm not saying that TCP couldn't be a classic someday, just that it's not an extremely common instance for a show's revival to earn the same number of nominations.

The "keyboard programmer" listed for the production created the synthesized sound to imitate strings. It's noticeable to the ear but the rest of the orchestrations are gorgeous.
