Miss Saigon movie?

Danny Boyle supposedly in early talks to directs. There has been a few talks about musical film adaptations lately, Oliver, Cats, it's hard to get excited until something has more definite plans but OK let's bite.

This would be a perfect opportunity to kill the whole " all white Oscar nominees" trend  due to all the meaty POC roles  in this show.

No interest in seeing an Oliver remake. No interest in Cats at all.No interest in seeing anything where any race is excluded or "killed off" as you put it.

I read their post. Then I reread it. For the life of me, I can't find where they mentioned "killing off" any race.

What? Chris, the male lead,  is ( usually) White. I just said that many of the roles for POCs are potentially Oscar bait and that that's good considering all the up roar in the news recently about how there has been no non white nominees for the last couple of years.

When you search "Danny Boyle Miss Saigon", only links to this site and Daily Mail come up. I doubt this is legit. So much for the great content Patti Murin claimed Broadwayworld had Miss Saigon movie?

I still think The Daily Mail is a much more reliable source than The Sun which had those reports on Cats and Wicked.

This is really interesting and exciting.

I love his work. It has this very filmic and cinematographic look (better than life look, editing, camera movements and shots and colors) that could work perfectly for this film.

I really hope they continue in this "non literal way" with this material.

I hope this comes true. My first thought after watching Slumdog Millionaire was "He'll be the perfect director for MS movie. "

I've only seen MISS SAIGON once years ago and I don't remember it all that well, but I think Danny Boyle is an exceptional director. I'd go see it and drag a friend!

I thought the same thing. He definitely understands the filmmaking part.

I just hope he understands the musical material too. That he understands the non-literal benefits of this material on film. And that he understands it is important to pre-record the songs as a filmic voiceover, as a non-literal triumph of the fantasy. Actors are perfectly capable of matching the acting with the song. Also editing takes it to the next level.  It should be as non-live as possible. And most importantly, that he understands that separating acting from singing, what Hugh Jackman does (speaking 4 words and vibrate for 10 seconds on the last word) makes it unnatural. Instead you should combine it. Use people who can sing the whole sentence and act through the notes. Sing "Now come on ladies, settle down" and act it instead of speaking "now come on ladies, settle" and then sing the word "dooooooooooooown".

Would love to see Jonathan Pryce reprise the role if this film actually happens.

I know it's highly unlikely but I'm going to dream.

He is actually too old for the role by now.

How about Ken Watanabe?

Could be interesting. I'm sure he could pull it off.

Although deep down inside I think the roles of the Engineer and Kim are like diamonds, it takes years to sharpen and polish them. These 2 roles benefit from someone who knows the role inside-out. I'm also not sure if these 2 roles need to be a Hollywood name.

I would love to see Tanya Manalang as Kim on film, as she is an outstanding actress. I doubt they can find anyone that tops Jon Jon Briones' Engineer.

I've always thought Miss Saigon would do very well on film.

GAH THIS IS EXCITING! I hope it comes to fruition as I really love Boyle's directorial style, specifically Slumdog, Trainspotting, and 127 Hours! Any other casting predictions? Maybe they could bring Salonga on as an honor of sorts...though I'm not sure what part she'd play. Hmm...

I think only Ellen or John could be celebrity casting. Maybe Lady Gaga as Ellen? It sounds ridiculous but she actually has some interesting qualities for it.

Edit: I also think Amy Adams could make a terrific Ellen. Acting wise.

After seeing Hoon Lees' performance in Banshee thought he would be excellent as the Engineer.

As Kim's mother in a brief prologue or flashback for the massacre scene of "how my village was blasted away ... family whose faces are gone"?

That is a terrific idea! I just think it would be such a great way to honor her if she was featured in some capacity!

Or on a photograph that Kim holds when she sings "you have brought me through the lightning
you have watched me from afar, you know all and you forgive me, loving parents that you are"

I think it could be quite epic if done right.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

Any casting ideas?

At the moment these people seem a possibility to me;

Engineer - Jon Jon Briones/ BD Wong

Kim - Tanya Manalang, she is a truly outstanding actress.

Chris - Aaron Tveit/Jeremy Jordan

Ellen - Amy Adams/Another interesting choice could be Lady Gaga. She has a better singing voice for the material and she could make of Ellen an interesting counterpart in the love triangle.

John - No idea. This is a role that could go to a name. For example a great singing black popstar. Any names?

Thuy - No idea

Gigi - Nicole Scherzinger

I think Boyle would be as good a director as any. I loved the OLC growing up and listened to it again the other day for the first time in a very long time and my god some of that music in hindsight is awful. I do wonder if they will keep it all sung through.  "Last Night in the World" and "Sun and Moon" sound like bad material on a cruise ship. Doesn't hold up well at all.

But if they cutback in the treacly ballads and focus on the epic it might work.

i also think they should really look at cutting way back the character of Ellen; she will NEVER be sympathetic to an audience. We should see her for the first time at the same time Kim does and she certainly doesn't need a solo song for film.
