Hey guys! I am a 16 year old student at a high school with a show choir and every year, there are solo competitions I attend in the Midwest within my show choir comps. This year, I won best soloist with the song "I'm Here" from The Color Purple. If you don't know the song, it is ABSOLUTELY beautiful. I was wondering if you could suggest songs that are related to that type of song, so I could look for my solo comp piece for next year! I made the mistake of not saving that song for my senior year, so it's really hard to find a song as great as "I'm Here". At my school, I am known to sing songs that always end with a held out belt. I was hoping you could help me out! I'm trying to stay away from the over sung songs like Gimme Gimme and what not. I can belt up to an E5 and hold out a c#5 if that helps a little. Thank you so much!:)

So Much Better from Legally Blonde ends with a big sustained belted note at the end and also has a similar theme as I'm Here, although the context (in the shows) of the two songs is quite different in tone/mood, the latter being more serious and the former more comedic.

Meadowlark from the Bakers Wife, As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Blvd, Easy as Life from Aida and Fabulous Baby from Sister Act. I think would either one of those songs would be perfect for you and would really show off your voice and are not over performed in schools. Good Luck!

Does Somewhere That's Green really end on a high belt? I thought it ended kind of softly with a long sustained "greeeeeeeeeeeeen."

You're right. It doesn't end with a belt. There's no belt in the song.

God, I love that song! I've been trying to locate sheet music for it for years.
I was going to suggest Waiting for Life to Begin from Once On This Island until I realized that if sung by young teen girl, it may sound rather creepy: "My stranger...one day he'll arrive. The car will stop and in I'll hop and off we'll drive!"
