I was talking with a friend last night about how werewolves look like they're coming in now, just as vampires are starting to wane. This led to a discussion of what the best supernatural creature is. With so many horror fans here on the board, I thought I'd ask you: what's the best supernatural creature?

Anything but zombies. Enough with the goddamn zombies already.

Give me a bloodsucker all the time. A vampire can change into a wolf but a wolf is just a wolf & only during the cycle of a full moon.

A vampire lives forever unless he gets hit by the sun or sees a really bad Broadway show.

The NY Mets are resembling zombies right now with head zombie being Michael Cuddayer. Talk about colossal busts.

I'm a little bored with zombies, but if I recall from when I read Stephen King's textbook "Danse Macabre," you break down your beasties into five major categories.

THE VAMPIRE: anything that lives off life force siphoned from something else. Vampires, succubi, some forms of ghost, some forms of psychic, etc.

THE GHOUL: something dead reanimated into something slightly less than life. Zombies, golems, Frankensteins, mummies, etc.

THE GHOST: mostly non-physical beings who are often capable of physical manifestation, sometimes related to strong emotion, a religious or legendary concept, or the souls of the dead. Ghosts, poltergeists, tulpas, the Babadook, some demons, lots of Lovecraft, etc.

THE CREATURE: a physical being that is inhuman and often hostile. Space aliens, Bigfoot, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, etc.

THE WEREWOLF: a being that appears harmless or "normal" but can, under circumstances in or out of its control, become a dangerous other thing. Werewolves, were-anythings, Mr. Hyde, the cursed pirates in "Pirates of the Caribbean," Norman Bates, most non-supernatural serial killers, etc.

Lately, I've been partial to a good Tulpa, myself. Especially after seeing Next to Normal, which is one of the best tulpa stories I know of.

Ghouls are the Rodney Dangerfields of creatures.

A 1940's entry The Mad Ghoul was a favorite along with Ed Wood's hilariously bad Night Of The Ghouls .

Nothing has ever come close to the monsters in the Alien series. The face hugger and xenomorph dominate.

Zombie overexposure has sort of killed off the rest of the ghoul family.

I have always preferred me a great Ghost Story. The Legend of Hill House, The Others, The Woman in Black, etc. They tend to be more phychological when done right.

Now most of these are just gore fests - nothing left to the imagination.

I'm with you on that one, SNAFU, especially when it comes to demons and possession.  The Exorcist still holds the title for the movie that frightens me the most (with movies like Poltergeist, The Sixth Sense, The Omen, and The Others rounding out the list), and I think a large part of that is the psychological thrills that Friedkin so masterfully pulls off in that movie.  A good ghost story is always going to be more appealing to me than one that has some monster and/or killer merely out to mutilate every character they come across.

Vampires do not wane - they vein or devein

Seriously, the Original Rosemary's Baby is indeed a classic. The ending was more terrifying than if they had shown the eyes.

As with most remakes, it stunk despite the Paris locale. This was the only reason we sat thru it.

I watch Rosemary's Baby, usuallyonce a year. It has never gotten old or felt dated to me. For me it is Polanski's crown jewel! The final elevator chase always has me on the edge of my seat! I also love how Minnie goes from a dottering old woman to someone to fear. So subtle, so BRILLIANT!

Another good creepy one is the original Sentinel with Chris Sarandon . The movie is creepy but excessively gross ending spoils it. It could have been done differently

"FYIAD!"

I don't have a definitive answer of my own, but when I put this question to my husband, he replied without missing a beat, "Dragon!"
