What a lovely success story of "the little show that could".
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
For a show preparing to close the Tuesday after the Tony's, it is truly marvelous that they recouped! While I am not a fan of the show itself - especially the inane prices they are charging, it is always a good thing when a broadway show recoups!
Many congratulations to the show. It is a great show, and a great story in the Broadway world that went from not much hope before the Tonys to sold out successful weeks.
kinky boots cost more than double and recouped in only 30 weeks. just saying since they're both tony winning best musicals one year apart. still not a fan of the show.
"For a show preparing to close the Tuesday after the Tony's, it is truly marvelous that they recouped!"
Wait, what? I haven't seen any announcement that the show is closing, and the article doesn't mention that. Or are you talking about plans for closing last year if they had not won?
What does Kinky Boots have to do with any of this? Totally different shows, totally different situation.
This is such a charming little show, and I'm glad to see it succeeding- and good on the producers for having faith in it!
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Not a fan of the show and thought it was too high pitched and overrated (it is coming to Iowa for the 2015-2016 season and I exchanged my tix for another show!) Seen it 1x and that is enough! But glad to hear they have recouped. Always good to hear of shows succeeding!

Closing plans last year.
One of the many articles that came out the day after GG won was about how the show was going to close up shop that week. I can't find it now, but it exists. perhaps it's in the 2014 Tony thread.

Ah, OK.
Loved this show, and glad to see it recoup. Crazy to think that a show in a modest size theater, with a normal orchestra, 11 cast members, and no outlandish sets still costs $600,000 a week to run. No wonder so few shows earn back their investments.
Congratulations are indeed in order! Well done, gents! (And ladies!)
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
Congrats to a wonderful show and smart, dedicated producers focusing on the good of their show.
And a slight laugh and a shake of my head to certain things in this thread.
The lead producer, bless his soul, hired an orchestra double the size required in that theatre and stuck out the lean winter months with intelligence, dedication, and the absolutely spot on belief that the show would be nominated and receive exposure and sales would go up. His every decision aimed toward that not toward folding the Tuesday after the Tonys.
I enjoyed the show and am glad it has achieved success.
But let's not exaggerate the power of producers' game plans. The best laid plans are also dependent on good luck and good timing. If the putrid little stinker that has everyone swooning on this board had transferred to Broadway last season, Gentleman's Guide would not have won the Tony, and would not have gotten the financial bounce it received. Similarly, if Hamilton transferred to Broadway this season, the putrid little stinker would not be sweeping the Tony Awards this year as it unfortunately will, and would be consigned to the oblivion it so richly deserves.
Count me in the group that loves this show, so I am thrilled with the news. (But yes, to ANY show recouping.)
It had been reported that Bryce WOULD be returning to GGLAM when his stint in Heidi was over. Looking forward to seeing this again with my students next weekend.
