"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
Would love to see Laura Michelle Kelly again as Eliza-she was a-mazing in the london production. shes 33 now...
can eliza be in her 30's? i dont know why not....
Other strong contenders I would fly 3000 miles to see in the role Sierra Boggess hard to think of other american actresses because if they cant do a great british accent (see michelle williams in cabaret...ughh) it could totally suck
henry higgins...how 'bout Douglas Hodge Nathan Lane
alfred p dooittle: Jefferson Mayes Bertie Carval
colonel pickering??
Freddie-???
there is a production of my fair lady this summer in sacramento by the music circus im going to, and also a production by broadway by the bay Ill be going to.
it just doesnt get much better than my fair lady
would love to see this production at lincoln center and get a great proshot of the stage version for PBS captured for posterity....
NBC or Fox should also do this musical as a live production for TV
I would love to see Jessie Mueller as Eliza Doolittle (she did say it's one of her dream roles)! If not, maybe Samantha Barks could make her Broadway debut...
Nathan Lane should be Alfie -- not Higgins. Sir Patrick is too old but would be a great Pickering. Any of the younger British or Irish men would be good for Higgins. He needs to be attractive. I'd vote for Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Farrell, Colin Firth, Gerard Butler, Gerard Butler, Gerard Butler.
OK, I'll admit it -- I have a thing for Gerard Butler. Just ignore my acting like a lovesick puppy.
Audrey
Audrey, the Phantom Phanatic, who nonetheless would rather be Jean Valjean, who knew how to make lemonade out of lemons.
I did see an absolutely fantastic SF playhouse production with a fantastic higgins (Johnny Moreno, who looks a LOT like Robert Downey jr) in his early 40s and it was played with much more sexual tension, and was completely awesome- so the thinking of a younger higgins to spice this up is intriguing
That Anne Hathaway/Colin Firth production would have been marvelous. Has it officially fallen through, or are we just assuming that because we haven't heard anything in years?
Many years ago, Gary Griffin did a beautiful production starring Kate Fry (a gifted actress who New York audiences might remember from A Minister's Wife a few seasons back) at the Court Theatre. It was scaled down to a chamber piece with 10 actors and 2 pianos, and it was the best production of the piece I have seen. The rescaling of the piece shone it in a totally new light unlike all those other shrinking you see all the time. I would love to see another small production like that (the 2-piano orchestration, which is beautiful, is licensable through Tams-Witmark).
I also saw that production at the SF playhouse and I didn't like it as much as you did. However, I agree that a younger Higgins is viable. I also think a Higgins who sings the songs instead of talking through them would be nice, though really nobody beats Rex Harrison in the role. I do, however, think it is absolutely necessary for Eliza to be young. Part of her appeal is the sort of freshness in the character. That isn't as necessary in Pygmalion, but it is in My Fair Lady. I remember one poster who shall remain unnamed suggested Audra McDonald for the role. I still laugh when I think of how terrible that would be.
