The filmed version of the show was on sky arts over Christmas.

Watching it on tv just highlighted how bad most of it is. The book is terrible. The first scenes between the majors wife and the captain just make no sense. People just dont talk like that. It doesnt get any better and the cuts made for the filming are odd.

What i did like about it was the choreography. The Company G scenes are fantastic. It just a shame they are few and far between.

I really cant see this getting a NYC production in its current form.

I tried to watch it but thought it was absolutely awful. The soldiers dancing/exercising on the beds looked weird. Darius Campbell proved he can't act. The scene between Darius and his boss's wife was just cringe-worthy. Didn't like any of the songs I heard (although I gave up watching after about 50 minutes). The scene with the prostitutes where the main guy met the prostitute he falls in love with reminded me of Miss Saigon.

I dont agree with the criticisms as a whole, i think the show was a very admirable flop, yes it had issues, yes the book needed work, yes it needed a great 11 oclock number, but the show had a heart, the cast were great, the set and lighting were wonderful, it just didnt quite come together. I have seen far worse shows that are still running after years.

Recorded it and watched last night.
I gave up the will to live after about 30 minutes as was bored stiff.
Talented cast and effective staging, but completely underwhelmed by the whole thing. Dialogue was laughable and nothing catchy tune wise.

I have to say that I agree with songanddanceman2 - though the show has obvious flaws, it's better than many shows I've seen that have had lengthy runs.

I saw the show twice at the Shaftesbury and watched the video when it was aired on TV over Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. I've always loved the book and the movie and it's a great story - and there are some really good songs in the score (really love MORE THAN AMERICA and THE BOYS OF 41 in particular). Plus the performances were really good - and was especially impressed by Robert Londsdale.

I think act 2 is far stronger, i understand why people gave up after 30 minutes, i think the first half of act 1 is pretty bad, it moves so slowly and the music and book s horrid, however it finds its feet after that, it had some stunning moments in act 2

"...the first half of act 1 is pretty bad, it moves so slowly and the music and book s horrid,"

The best song in the show, one of the best song EVER in a Brit musical, is during that part!!

I agree that the book needs work - especially the first two scenes with Warden and Karen. It would also be nice if there was a scene or song that let the audience in on why Prewitt and Lorene fall in love so hard and so quickly. It's as if the book writer assumed we have all read the novel or seen the film and I for one have not so this story was new to me and a few things didn't quite make sense. Aside from those minor flaws I really enjoyed it. The score is just fine with "Fight the Fight," "Run Along Joe" and "Ain't Where I Wanna Be Blues" standing out to me as the most enjoyable. I also got a kick out of the brief reprise of "You Got the Money" at the gay bar.

The staging was good, the scenery and costumes were spectacular and the actors were giving it their all. I liked Robert Lonsdale very much. The show should have worked but I think the first few book scenes did it in. The DVD is poorly edited but I enjoyed it for what it is and the DVD will likely get repeat viewings from me.

So glad I was able to see this musical when in London. A beautiful production in my opinion.

I recorded this from Sky and have to admit, I felt it was somewhat of an endurance to get to the end of Act one.

I have yet to watch the second act but, sadly, don't feel compelled to do this anytime soon.

I agree with some of what has already been said. I saw this show last March just before it closed and really enjoyed it. However, when watching the DVD I found the first half an hour hard to get into but then after that I got Into it and enjoyed it. I think there must have been some cuts on the DVD as I thought the show was a bit longer. I think there were some really good songs in the score too.

My main gripe is Darius Campbell who was so wooden as an actor that he was almost funny.

I bought a friend a copy of the DVD for Christmas but I think his silence means he didn't like it.

I attended the cinema screening of this in Chicago and found the first act either ridiculous or boring (or both). The first act finale had me laughing out loud. I left at intermission. I just couldn't take any more. And I was REALLY looking forward to it.
