Is it really feasible for The Book of Mormon to switch? They have spent the last three years in a mid-sized house. They would have to use larger sets, props, etc. AND I don't think the O'Neill is willing to let go of this cash cow.
We've seen shows switch to SMALLER theaters, but BIGGER ones? I don't know if that will work.
It seems like CHICAGO has no chance of beating PHANTOM's record-breaking run. I don't think it has much time left. Speaking of PHANTOM, have they considered downgrading from their barn?
I wager that MAMMA MIA, CHICAGO, and maybe even JERSEY BOYS will leave in the next couple of years.
Ouch. Sideshow really took it on the chin. There publicity machine needs to get in overdrive. Interesting to see their NY Times print ad in Sunday's edition.
Side Show did open this week, so a bunch of that drop is all of the comps for opening night/review press, one hopes. Although they did have much of the week to build on the good reviews...
Funny thing about Chicago. When it went to the Ambassador everyone thought it would die. To think how much longer this has run compared to the original with Chita & Gwen is absolutely mind boggling. It is more mind boggling than how Cats lasted beyond opening night
So most of Monday night's seats for SIDE SHOW were given away. And 2nd tier press was part of the remainder of the week. So as bad as it is, it's still not representative. But it's very unsettling, not good by any means. And as has already been reported, none of the new musicals are catching fire whatsoever. Baffling.
"I'm a comedian, but in my spare time, things bother me." Garry Shandling
I read somewhere that Book of Mormon got offered the St Jamess, I think after 'On A Clear Night', closed and Mormon were fairly new in the Eugene O'Neil, but the producers knocked it back, as their ticket structure wouldn't work. You can actually make more money in a smaller theatre, than one that is bigger.
Reduced attendance? The attendance numbers are the same or gain most years. We're not experiencing any reduced attendance. They're just all going to Wicked, Lion King & Book of Mormon.
"I wager that MAMMA MIA, CHICAGO, and maybe even JERSEY BOYS will leave in the next couple of years." I disagree about "Chicago." : )
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
^I disagree about Jersey Boys. For a show that consistently stays in the 60-70% potential range, and 70-90% capacity range won't go anywhere anytime soon.
I don't know what it's break even is, but if you look at the grosses over the years on an annual basis, it is doing the same business that it did last year and five years ago and ten years ago. I assume that the weekly nut has gone up over time...the question ultimately is how much room they have with an average gross of $500k over the course of the year
