I guess everyone's opinions on this will be different but for me it's a no-brainer - BILLY ELLIOT by a mile.

As I said - everyone has different tastes, so there will be conflicting opinions. I take your point, though Firefingers, about BE being on DVD but live theatre is always so much more special. Also, for me, BE is a far superior show (I'd rate it one of the 5 best musicals currently running in the West End) - Matilda bored me witless lol. But I also know a lot of people who loved Matilda - just comes down to personal taste.

I'd say Billy Elliot. For me Matilda was good but it just didn't live up to all th hype whereas Billy had me from the start to the end on so many levels.
Disagree, I love both shows, however Billy Elliot edges it for me, but that is no reason to see Billy Elliot over Matilda.
You don't get the full effects of Billy on DVD and is a show that needs to be seen live.
Also by the end of next year, chances are Billy will be playing nowhere in the world, London will close, unless Billy goes on the road in the UK, that may be your last chance to see it.
Matilda has vibrant productions in London and New York that are likely to run in the foreseeable future, also the US tour is commencing soon, as is an Australian production middle of next year, so you will get opportunities to see Matilda in the future.
BILLY ELLIOT is definitely the better show; just look at all the awards it has won. MATILDA's story and humor is juvenile and over the top, geared more towards young children, so if you like that kind of thing then MATILDA might be for you. But don't expect to be moved by the proceedings. BILLY ELLIOT on the other hand, will have you laughing and crying within minutes. It is without a doubt one of the most emotionally moving shows you are likely to see. And it really needs to be seen live.
Neither. Both shows did not live up to all the hype for me. Specifically, Billy Elliot is a show that I consider to be highly overrated, with a dull score and plodding, stereotypical book.I would go see Once.
Matilda actually has a good score and clever, witty lyrics. But Billy Elliot is ok too.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
