Hi all...would like to get feedback on a work related issue.

I put in a lot of hours at my job. A part-time employee complained to my boss that I was "always" talking about how much I work and that I was directing it towards her and making her feel uncomfortable because she wasn't. Of course, I wasn't. I was always talking to others and she just eavesdrop. She later retracted her statement and said she was wrong.

In my recent annual job review, my boss brought up this situation and made it look like I instigated the situation. This is a formal, written annual review.

Should I write an addendum to go with this explaining all the circumstances? I am afraid it will cause much friction between me and my boss. But I also don't want false statements about my employment made. Thanks!

If I didn't agree with something a manager wrote about me in an annual review, I always took the opportunity to say so (in a professional way of course) in the comment box given where we were to sign off on it. Our review system and manager's ability to mark one down to fit into their percentages was one of the many reasons why I chose to leave that job.

The best way to handle this is to go back to the manager and say "I've been thinking about this- how can I handle it?" and put the ball in HIS court. Because of course there is nothing you can do about it. But it also shows you WANT to improve and take his review seriously.

When it comes to unfair accusations in the workplace, the rule of the jungle, unfortunately, is "perception is reality."

If you boss perceives that you acted badly toward this temp, you have to refute it as simply as possible and move forward from there. Refuting it with vehemence will only persuade your boss that it's true.

The important thing is your ongoing relationship with your boss. Don't make this about the temp and his/her accusations. That's history. Focus on your job performance and your relationship with your boss.

Don't talk to others about how much you work or other negative things. There is always at least one, who is ready to take the opportunity to use the info against you. The less said the better.

Do you work in an office environment? This seems very retail-y. It sounds so bizarrely juvenile - your coworker's complaint and your boss' reaction - not your actions.

PJ nailed it when he said "perception is reality", though.
