I have recently been working on writing a new one act musical comedy/drama with composer Rob Eyles, entitled A PEBBLE FOR AARON.
"It's late November in New York's East Village and it's snowing. Ray Green, a Jewish man in his 50s, and Bella, Ray's alcoholic ex-wife, enter Stan's Diner on the morning of what would have been their dead son Aaron's 30th birthday and proceed to exchange a series of barbed, vicious but also comic one-liners while waiting for their breakfast. What are the ghosts from the past that still tear this couple apart with such a deep sense of hurt? Why is Ray reading his newspaper upside down? Why does Aaron's former boyfriend, Joey, come to meet with Bella on this day? Who placed a new pebble on Aaron's grave? A Pebble For Aaron – a musical about loss, grief, guilt and insults for breakfast - will answer these questions while making you laugh and cry."
We've just recorded demos of some of the songs with a quite incredible cast - Michael Matus (Ray), Rebecca Lock (Bella) & Shaun McCourt (Joey). I'll post links to the recordings as and when we get them up on soundcloud. Here's the first of them - the wonderful Shaun McCourt singing "Losing Him": https://soundcloud.com/bobwordsmith/losing-him

Really nice Bob...my favourite so far is Getting Through Today. I wish some of the subsidised theatre should be doing more to promote new stuff like this. I know they need to be commercial but worry that we will get new productions of Sweeney Todd (and I love Sondheim as much as the next gay man) every 3 years forever and new things won't be given a chance. Good luck with it and please update us on its progress
Thanks, dgjbear! So pleased that you like it. And yes, it is such a tough uphill battle to get new musical theatre to the stage. There is SO much fantastic new writing out there but sadly there are only a handful of producers brave enough to support new writing. We are actively pitching this show right now and I will certainly update the Board with any news.
I see you've already got to listen to GETTING THROUGH TODAY before I even got round to posting it on here - so here's the link for anyone else who may like to take a listen. The vocals are by the exquisitely brilliant Rebecca Lock. https://soundcloud.com/bobwordsmith/getting-through-today
