I have one more slot available to buy tickets for an upcoming trip to New York in December.

Assuming I have already seen everything else, or I am already planning on seeing everything else, which do you think I should see ..... Elephant Man or The Last Ship ????

Neither has started performances yet, so you won't be getting any opinion responses here. Though you've chosen two completely different works. Let's see:
The Last Ship is a new musical with music written by Sting.
The Elephant Man is a revived play starring Academy-Award nominated actor Bradley Cooper.

At this point it's all about deciding what you want that last slot to look like. What else are you seeing? Seems like the two are so different it shouldn't be hard to pick based on things you like to see.

Thank you for responding, Greased Lightning. I should have phrased my question, which would you choose if these were the only 2 theater events available to choose from?

Regarding me, I like a variety of stuff. The rest of my trip is half plays and half musicals.

Obviously I know that these two shows have not opened yet. I was just curious if other readers on this board would pick Elephant Man or The Last Ship. Honestly I am 50/50.

As GL mentioned, both are yet to open in NYC so who knows what state they're in though I'm sure both would be good, if very different, options.

I did get the chance to see The Last Ship when it was in Chicago. There was definitely room for improvement in some areas, balancing some characters out but hopefully they've addressed some of these in the interim and likely more in previews. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it. Both the Act 1 and Finale scene were quite exciting and breath taking, I remember leaving the theater and wanting to see it again for those scenes alone. "The Last Ship" is definitely a catchy song with a bit of gravitas that is used quite well in several instances and Rachel Tucker's and Aaron Lazar's "big" songs were also nice standouts.

Just my two cents if it's of any help, good luck choosing!

I wish I could be of more help, JPeterman! These are two of my must-sees as well, personally, so I'd choose both if I could! Having trouble choosing just one myself if I were in your position. Maybe I'll think about it and get back to you!

As others have said, neither has started previews so you're asking people to basically pull an opinion out of their ass. I've never had a problem doing that so...

I'd go for Elephant Man strictly on the strength of the cast. Bradley Cooper is a great actor, Patricia Clarkson is ALWAYS good, I saw Alessandro Nivola in the Winslow Boy and he was money and one of my favorite character actors, Anthony Heald has also joined the cast. I also bought the Sting CD The Last Ship when it came out last year and although I know the Broadway version will be somewhat different, I thought the whole CD was meh.

So there you have it. But the shows are so completely different. Doesn't the plot and subject of one of them speak out to you more than the other?

I would pick Last Ship because I'd rather see a new musical than a play revival. But both will be good. It's up to you and your preferences.

Judging by the acclaim that The Elephant Man received when done at WTF (WTF?), that would have my vote. Also, it's a limited run. I think The Last Ship is slated for an open run, so more opportunities to see it, if the public decides it's worthwhile.

It's completely up to you and your more opinions. The Elephant Man has a strong cast but if your more a musical person than catch The Last Ship. From what I have heard from friends they have enjoyed The Last Ship very much.

The Elephant Man just because Bradley Cooper is in it.
