I am a big fan but I would much rather have some new music from her. I will not be buying this cd.

Me either . And I normally buy everything she puts out. The song selections don't interest me.

I completely understand and respect that reaction. On the other hand, I feel like she's earned the right to sing what she wants to sing. I am often fascinated by true artists doing covers; I think new things can be revealed about old songs.

I'm in.

If I can find something good about this...maybe she will tour in the USA, to support the release.

To be fair, her last album of original material was lacking the spark and originality of her work with Eurythmics and her early solo work anyway. I honestly wouldn't mind an Annie Lennox album of standards, but did she have to pick the most obvious, overdone, overly familiar works? Could have been much more interesting if she'd picked some lesser known standards.

The whole "s/he's earned the right to put out whatever music they want" thing might be true, but the public has also earned the right to tell lazy artists that we don't want to spend money on their laziness.

I'm honestly perplexed by the negativity. There are plenty of songwriters who can't (or don't) sing. Their songs are performed by singers. Annie Lenox is a singer. She's singing songs written by other people. What has she done wrong?

I should have clarified before. I wasn't refering to Lennox specifically, but to it in general.

Jordan, I couldn't agree more. So don't buy it.

Streisand is an example of this as well. I'd love to hear some NEW music from her but she doesn't seem to want to do anything but sing the same old songs over and over again.

But do many artists in their 60s and 70s record new material? Not saying they shouldn't, but are these women exceptional in not doing it?

Y'know, I'm not sure about that. But i know Bette Midler is another one who just does cover songs now which I wish would change.

Again--a fair reaction. But there are a number of vocalists I admire enough to be interested in whatever they're interested in singing. I think I'd put Lennox on that list.

She really is an amazing singer, no matter what she sings.

It's not that I'm insensible to the idea that there's more meaning, more emotional...ooomph...when the lyrics are her own--'Diva' is a desert island disc for me, for sure--but her cover of 'No More I Love You's' is alone worth the price of 'Medusa', IMO.

I confess that I've never listened to 'Christmas Cornucopia', but I'm not a consumer of Xmas music.

I'm eager to hear the tracks on the new album.

The problem is that they sell more albums with covers than they do originals, which is why everyone is doing it. Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, and many others have made covers a huge part of their output, because they will sell more, and people complain when they play the new stuff live anyway. So, it is partly a 'give the people what they want' mentality... I don;t know if that is Annie's take on it.

I have to agree with Jordan. I was extremely disappointed to see the track listing for Streisand's upcoming duets album. The Way We were, Evergreen, Come Rain or Come Shine, What Kind of Fool, etc. Been there, done that - regardless of who she is singing with. I'd rather she sang songs identified with the male partners she is singing with. The closest she comes to doing this is New York State of Mind with Billy Joel - but she already sang this in 1977 and sounded better then than now.

I agree that recording your own repertoire over and over seems kind of pointless (see also Judy Garland). But I think that's different than Annie Lennox doing an album of standards.

Annie Lennox always amazes me because she is a song interpreter-she is able to give old material a new meaning, or take it and re-invent/re-interpret it. I'm willing to give it a listen (and her voice is unlike anyone else's-I grew up loving the Eurythmics and Diva is one of my favorite albums. That said, Medusa is still a brilliant album.) We'll see how she does. I'm game.

Annie Lennox's version of The Clash's "Train in Vain" brought the new meaning "I don't know what the hell I'm singing about but the label says this will appeal to Gen Xers", and Lord knows we all needed that. "Whiter Shade of Pale" sounded like the first run through and an unnecessary remake of a terribly overplayed song.

I love Annie Lennox and feel that her voice has always been one of the best. Bette Midler really needs to do something besides talk about how great she used to be...

Did I miss the legislation that made it illegal to NOT buy her album? Who cares otherwise- it's as bad as the people who rant about another Sondheim revival.

Nope, it's neither illegal to not buy her album nor to comment on it nor to start another thread about how fantastic an idea this sounds. Not illegal at all.

Wait--what?

Seriously, I think all these reactions are legit. Listen; don't listen. I'm not totally sure about what she should be doing instead, but that's not to say there's no better idea. But I'm still interested in giving a listen.
