I don't know how much this will resemble the song's final form, but Minchin has long performed solo versions of his show tunes, particularly "When I Grow Up" and "Naughty" in concerts. So this is a ballad from his upcoming "Groundhog Day" musical.

Thank you for the link! I was looking for this after the article from yesterday and I just couldn't seem to find any footage of it.

He should've won the Tony... I'll say it again. He should've won the freaking Tony.

If Groundhog Day ends up coming to Broadway, maybe he'll win a Tony for that show...

This is going to be a killer role for the guy who is lucky enough to play it.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

The song is really pretty but far more somber and serious than I would have expected for "Groundhog Day". Very curious.

I think that's the hallmark of Tim's work- building scores and songs where the ludicrously grotesque comic stylings and serious emotional introspection can work side by side.

I guess I would have expected some humor making it's way into the lyrics but I'm intrigued!

This version also has his performance of "When I Grow Up" afterwards, which is pretty awesome.

Of all the composer demo recordings that are regularly traded, no one seems to have Minchin's Matilda demo, which sucks, because I think I would like it just as much as I do the Broadway cast album, and more than the West End.

There are very few shows where I like the demo more than the real thing. Spring Awakening is one. I think this might be another. (I had high hopes for the Book of Mormon demo, but it turned out a little blander than expected.)
