Been listening to several cast recordings of this last season today and just been thinking about how although it's not been a groundbreaking year, there have been a few outstanding tunes, and was just wondering about everyone else's opinion?
I've loved "I've Decided to Marry You" from Gentleman's Guide, "One Second and a Million Miles" from Bridges, "Fight The Dragons" from Big Fish, "Our Love Is God" from Heathers (I know, off-broadway) and NPH's "Origin of Love" (if it counts!)
Say what you want about the show, but "The Things I Never Said" from First Date is now one of my favorite songs, along with "Always Starting Over" from If/Then.
Mine were: "Always Starting Over" - If/Then "Seventeen" - Heathers (If Hedwig Counts) Wicked Little Town - Hedwig "One Second and A Million Miles" and "All Fades Away" - Bridges "Raining" - Rocky "Let It Sing" - Violet
Always Starting Over - If/Then Some Other Me - If/Then Best Worst Mistake - If/Then One Second and a Million Miles - The Bridges of Madison County State Road 21 - The Bridges of Madison County Suger Daddy - Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Just from original scores (not first time Broadway revivals like HEDWIG or VIOLET). These are just some of my person favorites...
'Always Starting Over' IF/THEN
'I've Decided to Marry You" A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER
"One Second and A Million Miles" THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY
'Time Stops' BIG FISH
'You Don't Need to Love Me' IF/THEN
'Always Better' THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY
'Almost Real' THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY
'It All Fades Away' THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
I don't think anything from Violet or Hedwig counts as a song from this season. If so, just about the entire Hedwig score and a few of the songs from Violet would rank at the top for me.
My list: (in rough order) "I've Decided to Marry You" from A Gentleman's Guide "It All Fades Away" Bridges "That Horrible Woman" A Gentleman's Guide "Always Starting Over" If/Then, it would be even more powerful if the rest of the score didn't have the exact same sound and message "I Don't Understand the Poor" A Gentleman's Guide "Raining" from Rocky - a horrible show gave us a beautiful ballad. If only the rest of the score even came close to the brilliance achieved here. The songs sounds written for Margot Seibert's voice as well. "One Second and a Million Miles" Bridges "Better with a Man" from A Gentleman's Guide
Scratch and claw for every day you're worth!
Make them drag you screaming from life, keep dreaming
You'll live forever here on earth.
"I've Decided to Marry You" is pretty handily the best song from GENT'S GUIDE to me, and the highlight of the show (non-Jefferson Mays division.)
Other highlights, to me: "Ring of Keys" from FUN HOME Much of the second act of BRIDGES, including "One Second and a Million Miles", "Almost Real", "It All Fades Away" and "Always Better" "Raining" and "Keep On Standing" from ROCKY "1650 Broadway Medley" from BEAUTIFUL (the songs are old classic but this medley is fantastic!) That one pop/rock up-tempo ballad from IF/THEN about choices and possibilities that repeats dozens of times during the show with different titles.
Also, since I first saw GREAT COMET during this season's run, I have to include "Sonya Alone", "The Duel", "Pierre & Natasha", "No One Else", "Pierre", "Prologue" and "The Great Comet of 1812." That was easily my favorite score of this year, if I'm allowed that not having seen it at Ars Nova.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
"Living Dead" from JASPER IN DEADLAND "I've Decided to Marry You" from A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER "Always Starting Over" from IF/THEN "Flying Away" from FUN HOME
