"Maybe it's not doing well because people aren't willing to celebrate the life of someone who wasn't a good person."
Perhaps, even though it wasn't a bio of his life. I think with the poor promotional campaign, a known violent felon being celebrated, and that most people I've talked to about the show will just go to a rap concert if they want to see rap being performed. I was at a midtown pizza place last week and I was sitting next to five tourists. They were going over what show to see. When someone suggested Holler one said "I don't want to see a black show". It's a little bit of everything, I think. I think rap belongs on Broadway but I don't think the majority of people that come to see a show in NYC would agree.
This show should have never happened with several out of town tryouts. It makes me sad how much money, time, and talent was wasted here.
So many shows depend on group sales and theater parties to build an advance. The congregations of Our Lady Of Holy Broadway or Temple Beth Great White Way were not interested at all. Nor were groups from Baptist Churches either. Nor was it appropriate for school groups. They over estimated the appeal of the music of a thug rapper from 20 years ago. And they opened in the summer. And the artwork was awful. and there was no publicity. But Whoopi loved it- of course. Now put the theater back the way it was and get something decent in there. BIG FLOP.
