Hello Broadway World!

I'm about to start my first year teaching at a private academy (this school starts classes in June -- weird, I know). I'm teaching 8 musical theatre classes a day: 3 middle school classes, and 5 high school classes, separated by experience and auditions, etc.

Each class is required by the academy to give a "presentation" of a song once or twice per month. With eight separate classes, that can be almost 16 different songs per month -- that's a lot! Luckily, my assistant is a former Off-broadway choreographer, so I leave all the choreo to her, and I head up the music portion.

I'm looking for ensemble songs (or songs that can be transformed into ensemble songs), that are easy to learn, and not too difficult. I have a fair collection of things, but doing 16 songs a month is going to eliminate my resources pretty quickly!

PLEASE give me ideas of easy, and quality numbers that I could do. I'm looking for both high school and middle school material. (Preferably up-tempo songs!)

THANK YOU!

Coffee Break from How to Succeed is fast to teach and a whole lot of fun to perform.

Can't go wrong with Hard-Knock Life for middle school students.

Coffee break is a great one. I was with a kids theater group and we did "it's not where you start, it's where you finish" from Seesaw. That's a good one for kids.

If you have a group of older kids (near graduation) may I suggest When I Grow Up from Matilda. Takes on a different meaning and is beautiful -- no need for choreography at all.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

"On My Way" and "Bring Me to Light" from Violet can both be good when you want some exciting vocals and minimal staging. And out of context of the show you can divide both into a lot more solo lines to accommodate pretty much any size group if you so desire.

Hey Look Me Over from Wildcat

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
