There are so many disparate After Midnight threads. Thought it might be nice to have one thread to discuss the show for it's March-June performances. We have:
TONI BRAXTON & BABYFACE: Now-March 30 VANESSA WILLIAMS (feat. Dule Hill): Apr 1-May 11 FANTASIA (feat. Dule Hill): May 13-June 8
Has anyone seen Braxton & Babyface? The brief clips of them posted on AM's YouTube channel are a bit uninspiring. Braxton looks a bit uncomfortable and Babyface is pleasant but hardly sets the stage on fire. Very interested to see how Vanessa does -- class act all around. But I'm most excited about Fantasia's return. I wonder if she'll get any new material. Either way, I'm there! Updated On: 3/21/14 at 12:00 AM
Braxton has limited vocal abilities and almost no style, both of which make her ill-suited to sing this type of music. She's awkward and working way too hard. Whereas Fantasia and Lang were seamlessly integrated into the show, Braxton sticks out like a sore thumb. Babyface is fine as the host.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

"Will Vanessa Williams be joining Cicely Tyson in the production of THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL at the Ahmanson in Los Angeles later this summer?"
I don't think they have announced full casting but my guess is no, she won't. If she was, I'm sure they would have announced her along with Cicely Tyson when they issued the press release.
I saw Toni Braxton on Thursday night. I must agree with the post below. This show is such a work of art - glorious staging, choreography, and style throughout. And then, she takes the stage. I had these major expectations, but she just drained all energy from the show. She has some gorgeous notes in her voice, but that voice cannot fill a Broadway theater. I definitely plan to return to see Vanessa Williams and Fantasia.
The real stars are those dancers - every single one.
Oh dear! LOVED Fantasia. Then I saw k.d. and LOVED her. It fact, it's hard to say which one I loved more -- as they were so vastly different but both wonderful in the show. But those clips of Braxton and Babyface just make me want to go to sleep!

I have been attending theatre on a regualar basis for well over 30 years.... and Toni Braxton gave probably the worst performance I have ever seen. It was an embarrassment to what was otherwise a top notch show.
Thank goodness she's only in the show for 2 weeks.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
The performance I saw was this past Saturday night. Her first song was so bad I thought the sound man had fallen asleep and forgot to turn her mike on ... Her subsequent songs were never any better... she really did "stop the show" and not in a good way.
Looks like the producers are pulling discounts for April. The one on nytix.com ended 3/30 and no new one is listed. Nor is it listed at Broadwaybox.com.

"I have never understood the appeal of Toni Braxton. How has she had a recording career?"
She might not be right on Broadway but her 1996 album Secrets (written and produced by baby face) is one of the greatest pop/r&b albums of all time. 8 X Platinum. It is flawless. It is why I will always be a fan.
Did anyone see Vanessa's first show? I'm going on the 9th, and so excited. I love this woman. My second trip to the show. I saw KD the first time, and she was wonderful.

Which probably explains why it looks like they have barely sold any tickets this week. Look at the upcoming Saturday night (5th) - ouch:
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Let's bump this up... looking for anyone who has seen this with Vanessa yet to say how she did. I saw it with Fantasia but would see it again if V is any good.

Has it been confirmed that Patti is going to be joining the show- all the articles I have seen haven't been concrete- often times with the title of the article ending with a question mark. If true, this is AWSOME news!!
