The story is pure Hallmark tripe; the movie was redeemed by a truly over-the-top performance by Midler; without Midler, no redemption. And to make the garbage even cheaper, they interpolate that meaningless and shchmaltzy song that wasn't even written for the movie. This show sounds like the lowest of the lowbrow, with the sole aim of doing no more than squeezing a few extra dollars out of a once-popular film, the sort of thing that brings despair to those who seek just a little substance and integrity.

I can understand that, in your haste to snipe, you missed the qualifier in my message, "this show sounds like the lowest of the lowbrow....

Either way, I fear you are probably right. But I think in going to give this one a chance (partly because I love the Signature theatre; I've met wonderful people there).

That in no way describes The Signature Theatre. They consistently produce thoughtful and interesting theatre for the DC area. If the only goal of the show was to recreate and exploit the film, then the Company would not have produced it. Apparently the writer of the novel was the one who wanted to make her work into a musical and she put the team together: composer, lyricist, co book writer. They approached Signature to produce it (Signature has had 42 world premieres in their companies history, 14 of them musicals) and after a workshop, Signature agreed. Once again, their production values were wonderful.

I actually saw the show last night and enjoyed it. I can't say how it compares to the film, I have never seen the film. But from what I've heard the musical , which is based directly on the novel and not at all on the film, is very different. It needs some work but I am looking forward to seeing it grow and improve with new productions.

It was also nice not to see a show that was not written for the little kiddies. I am so tired of Disney musicals.
