Chauncey Miles in THE NANCE. I have no idea how they manage so many split second costume changes to get Nathan from scene to scene as the set revolves.
"I think Deloris has very little down time in SISTER ACT as far as I can remember. She has a few very short breaks scattered here and there."
She actually has quite a few breaks. She's offstage during Mother Superior's songs in both acts, and she's offstage when Eddie sings I Could Be That Guy. Same thing when Sister Mary Roberts sings The Life I Never Lead and the gangsters' songs in both acts.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
Christine is hardly ever off-stage in Phantom. I think the scene where Raoul and the police chief and managers plan the capture and the short scene where Mme. Giry tells Raoul about the man who escaped the traveling fair may be the only ones where she isn't involved at all.
In terms of plays , Salieri never leaves the stage at all except intermission. When Ian Mckellan played him, he was even onstage, with his back to the audience, as the people walked into the theatre.
I've been in CATS twice and the only roles that have significant off-stage time are Grizabella, Gus, and Bustopher Jones, unless they are doubling as ensemble cats. I suppose its a little different because it is an ensemble piece, but with the choreography it's grueling.
The only two times I was ever offstage was my costume change for Jennyanydots and "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer".
Surprised at how many of these I've done. I just finished playing David in a production of Company that kept the couples onstage during the whole show. It was a small space so when I was seated on a platform I may have had an audience member right next to me. The challenge of staying invested in a scene your character isn't directly involved in while there were audience members existing in the pretty much the same space your acting in was difficult but rewarding. The biggest challenge though was not having water. I also was onstage for the entirety of Godspell when my high school did that and the last supper scene always wound up being a silent fight for the grape juice lol. Interesting thread.
