Just voted, but who does the nominations for these? They're a mess! Some of the best regional theatre productions are left out (CalShakes, Berkeley Rep, SF Shakes, SJ Rep), but lots of little productions I never heard about are, so the awards will hardly represent the "best" of our local scene. Also, many of the nominations for individuals list production names, but not the companies (and there are often multiple productions of the same show in each category). A few nominations include the role the person played (very helpful)--would have liked to have seen more of this, especially for shows with big casts.

I totally agree! It would be helpful if the criteria and nominating process were explained. The groups nominated are certainly not a true representation of Bay Area theatre.

I'm up and down on the noms. I'm very glad that some smaller shows got some attention, because they almost never do. That said, there were certainly some additional noms that could have gone out. Also, I know at least one woman who was nominated who was put in a MALE category - so there's clearly some more attention that needs to be paid to detail.

I wouldn't say, however, that these nominations are not a true representation of the Bay Area. We're spoiled to have such a great theatre community - these nominations do light upon larger and smaller companies alike, so I do think that a rather excellent cross-section is represented, which definitely represents Bay Area theatre.

Regarding Megan's comment regarding certain larger theatres being left out - great theatre happens in halls both great and small. I don't think that one or two particular theatres being left out means that the whole thing is flawed. If there are certain productions or performances that one thinks ought to have been nominated, that's one thing - but I wouldn't necessarily think ill of a nominations simply because I didn't see the names of any larger theatres.
