I bought the OBCR for Grand Hotel last week, and after listening to David Carrol (R.I.P.) doing "Love Can't Happen" on the bonus track I have fallen in love with his voice and am curious as to what other recordings of him there are.
He was extraordinarily talented, and charming and beautiful. One of the angels felled by the Plague during the horrible years of the 80s and early 90s.
Here's a download link to an audio of a concert he gave at the 92nd Street Y on February 15, 1992, shortly before he died.
He had to sit in a chair ("Like Mabel Mercer," he said), but his lungs were still strong. He was assisted in the concert by his friends Judy Kaye, Judy Kuhn and Barbara Cook.
Thank you for sharing that Joey. I love David Carroll and wish he were still with us. I think Oh, Brother! and Mark Twain are both worthwhile but Chess is a must have.
He was all those things and more. A beautiful spirit with a kind heart and soul. He would have been 60 on July 30th. We were not close friends, but we did have an after theatre dinner together at Joe Allen's once. I recently found (while cleaning the garage) one letter and a card from him (1990). What an amazing, encouraging and supportive man. I am so happy that people still remember him, and that a new generation is appreciating what a gifted artist he was.
Not only that gorgeous voice, but so musical and sensitive! I made a joke that all the women and gay men in the audience wanted to be Liliane Montevecchi at the end of "Love Can't Happen" just to be underneath him. He was taking a sip of his drink at the time; it spayed all over the table because he laughed so hard he almost choked. Great man, great artist, and a great sense of humor. He is missed on every level. I will never understand it.
Thanks so much, Pal Joey, for posting that link. I am sitting here literally in a puddle of tears right now. It's staggering to hear his speaking his voice again! While illness muted it's bright timbre, it never muted his spirit or sense of humor. There's something so moving about the entire evening. You can hear the LOVE from everyone. As I said in my earlier post, he would have been 60 this coming Friday. This topic is so timely. In "Chess" and "Grand Hotel" he was as good as it gets. People don't realize just how sensational he was in Grand Hotel because he made it look so easy. It was a sin that he never got to record it!
I feel EXTREMELY fortunate to have experienced David Carroll-singing, dancing and acting, in both Chess and Grand Hotel. Thank God he did the Macys Parade that year so we all have his and Michael Jeter's lifting a glass, together preserved. The number was sublime!
I can recommend the Girl Crazy studio recording. The whole thing is very good and David Carrol is great.
Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)
I saw him in Grand Hotel in Boston (when it was still a mess) and he and Michael Jeter were spectacular. David's voice was probably the best male voice of its time I wish so much he could have survived the plague...but he lives on. I am sooo glad to hear he was as nice a person as he was talented...Anthem in Chess is one of the best vocals I have ever heard....God Bless Him!!
