There's this note going around on FaceBook that I thought I would post here on BWW.

Here it is! (I'm sticking to musicals that I've seen...not random shows that I'm madly obsessed with like HAIR and Little Shop of Horros):

List your top ten favorite musicals, and have a whack at the following assorted questions! )

1. Cabaret
2. Chicago
3. Spring Awakening
4. Sweeney Todd
5. RENT
6. Into the Woods
7. Company
8. Fiddler on the Roof
9. Hairspray
10. Movin' Out

How did you hear about 7?
My first exposure to 'Company' was through the 2006-2007 Tony Awards. I saw Raul Esparza playing piano and singing a strange yet beautiful song that I had never heard before and I became super curious. I later learned that the song was 'Being Alive' and I have been hooked on Company ever since.

Would 4 make a good movie?
At the risk of getting eaten, I'll say that it already has been made into an excellent film.

What's your favorite song from 10?
I've always loved the song 'In the Middle Of the Night'.

Who's your favorite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?
I loved everyone in the OBC, but none of them came close to Jonathan Groff. His performance as Melchior was spot on and I'm madly in love with his gorgeous voice.

How many times have you seen 9?
I saw Hairspray on tour 2 wonderful times! I would gladly go back a 3rd!

Who's your favorite character from 2?
Velma Kelly is one of my favorite female roles of all time. She's so sassy and sexy...she's a complete thrill to watch onstage (when performed well).

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
Oh boy...
3 complimentary programs, the coffee table book, the soundtrack, the OBCR, the film, and the final performance DVD (on blu-ray, of course!).

Is 8 by your favorite composer/lyricist?
I don't think I have a favorite composer, so I would have to say no.

Do you have a recording of every musical written by 1's composer?
I don't have ALL of their other musicals, but I do enjoy the CR's of Cabaret, Chicago, and Flora the Red Menace.

Could you recite all of the lyrics and dialogue from 6 by memory?
I'm a newbie to this show, so I haven't reached THAT status quite yet! 10 Musicals

The first musical you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
The first live musical I saw was the 2006-2007 national tour of RENT.

The first musical you saw on Broadway?
Wicked. I?m classy.

The first musical you saw off-Broadway?
Does the national tour of STOMP (which I LOVED) count?

The musical got you into musical theatre?
Oh god, here I go...RENT.

Your favorite composer?
I don't have a favorite composer. There are too many composers that I adore. Although this is slightly off-topic, I think the most underrated composer is John LaChiusa. The man is a genius and his wonderful score are always overlooked.

Your favorite musical from your favorite composer?
Like I said, I don't have a favorite composer, but my favorite John LaChiusa score is 'The Wild Party' and since most people probably see Sondheim as their favorite composer, I should say that 'Sweeney Todd' is his best show, by far.

The musical with your favorite choreography?
FOSSEE has the most incredible choreography I have ever seen in my entire life, but since it's more of a revue than a musical...my answer will have to be' Chicago'. Ann Reinking (sp?) captured the essence of Bob Fosse perfectly, which is rare.

Ever left a musical at intermission?
Never have, never will (unless it's because of an emergency).

Your all-time favorite song?
This is one of the toughest questions I will ever have to answer! I really love 'The Flesh Failures' from HAiR as well as 'Wait' from Sweeney Todd, 'America' from West Side Story, 'One Boy' from Bye Bye Birdie, and MANY MANY others. I don't know...I have way too many favorites.

Your all-time favorite lyric?
"Here is the church, here is the steeple, open the door...and look at the crazy married people"
-Company
That's a random lyric that never fails to amused me, but as for lyrics as a whole..I have tried my hardest to find a flaw in 'On the Steps of the Palace' from ITW and I just can't find one.

Your all-time favorite line of dialogue?
"To my mind, shame is nothing but a product of Education."

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
I'm usually the one that's clapping my hands off.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
I really wish that I could have seen Patti LuPone in 'Gypsy'.

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
As long as they do it well, I'm fine with it.

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
Like I said for the last question...anything works if it's done well.

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
Well OBVIOUSLY it was HAIR. :)

ETA: I'm ready to be eaten for my weird-o taste.

"There's nothing good on. The media hates Christmas. The media loves vampires, though. Maybe they will show a Twilight Christmas."
-Danmeg's 10 year old son.

Your all-time favorite line of dialogue?

No, unless I'm drunk.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
Barbra in Funny Girl. Or perhaps the original production of Threepenny.

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
Honestly, I don't like it, but I feel it's not even worth my time to worry about such things.

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
No.

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
Hair.

"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim

I would love to have seen the original 1935 Broadway production of Porgy and Bess.

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
More misses than hits, in my opinion; just because the movie was popular does not mean that it will translate well into a stage musical.

More often than not they can be quite entertaining.

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
I did not watch the Tonys this year.

#10re: 10 Musicals
Posted: 9/6/09 at 4:12am

I?ve done this in the past, so I?m changing the order of how I listed my musicals so I could have different answers?

1. Into the Woods
2. Wicked
3. Sweeney Todd
4. Legally Blonde
5. West Side Story
6. In the Heights
7. Gypsy
8. Next to Normal
9. Company
10. 9 to 5

How did you hear about 7?
I heard lots of buzz about the 2009 Patti revival and from the 2008 Tonys. I figured that instead of bothering to go see it live, I could just watch the movie. So I rented the TV Bette Midler movie of it and was completely surprised at how good it was. I could not believe that after all the musical movies I?ve seen, one could surpass all my favorites. I took my sister and went to see it on Broadway immediately, and 4 more times after that before it closed. The brilliance of the revival multiplied my loved for the show exponentially. And it is still my favorite show of all time.

Would 4 make a good movie?
It already was a movie obviously, just not a musical. I think a movie musical MIGHT be able to work ala the Hairspray movie. I think it could be a big bubbly, cheesy, fun movie just like the show.

What's your favorite song from 10?
I Just Might as well as Shine Like the Sun and the title song of course!

Who's your favorite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?
Angela Lansbury

How many times have you seen 9?
I?ve only seen the dvd of it, never live? yet.

Who's your favorite character from 2?
Glinda

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
Just a playbill from when I saw it, but I?d like the souvenir program.

Is 8 by your favorite composer/lyricist?
My favorite composer is Sondheim, but Tom Kitt/Brian Yorkey are phenomenal! They write beautiful songs and Next to Normal is one of my favorite scores.

Do you have a recording of every musical written by 1's composer?
I don't have ALL of their other musicals, but I do enjoy the CR's of Cabaret, Chicago, and Not ALL of them, but quite a bit.

Could you recite all of the lyrics and dialogue from 6 by memory?
No, but yes to a lot of the songs.

The first musical you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
I saw many regional, community, and school productions of the Wizard of Oz as a kid.

The first musical you saw on Broadway?
Cats.

The first musical you saw off-Broadway?
Next to Normal

The musical got you into musical theatre?
Probably all the ones I loved as a kid, especially The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music. But I didn?t start going to Broadway regularly until 2008 after seeing Mary Poppins, lol.

Your favorite composer?
Sondheim. Enough said. I also enjoy the works of Jason Robert Brown, Tom Kitt (as mentioned before), and Alan Menken, just to name a few.

Your favorite musical from your favorite composer?
Gypsy, but I?m not sure if that counts since he only did the lyrics. Then Into the Woods.

The musical with your favorite choreography?
I love the choreography of In the Heights.

Ever left a musical at intermission?
Never.

Your all-time favorite song?
That?s way too hard, but I?ll just mention ?Being Alive? from Company.

Your all-time favorite lyric?
Again, way too hard to choose just one, but I?ll go with the final song from In the Heights:
?I found my island, I?ve been on it this whole time, I?m home!?

Your all-time favorite line of dialogue?
The ending dialogue of Gypsy.

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
No way.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. To see Raul Esparza in Company, since I never got to see it live. Or to relive a performance of Patti Lupone Gypsy again.

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
I hate the lack of originality, but some I like.

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
Same answer as above.

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
Hair?s and the opening number was pretty awesome.

Yeah, I'm just going to copy and paste my Facebook one. XD I'm sad about only getting to choose ten musicals though. re: 10 Musicals

1. Floyd Collins
2. In the Heights
3. Assassins
4. Company
5. Sweeney Todd
6. Rent
7. Les Miserables
8. The Light in the Piazza
9. The King and I
10. La Cage aux Folles

How did you hear about 7?
I think every child in the western world with non-theatre-averse parents is born knowing about 7.

Would 4 make a good movie?
HAHAHAHA no. Well, maybe. Okay, it totally would, but non-musical fans wouldn't like it. But it doesn't need to make a good movie, thanks to PBS.

What's your favourite song from 10?
'Song on the Sand'. I cry nearly every time I hear it. I feel a little sad actually that I've heard three different men singing it, and the only one who didn't make me cry was the inestimable Clarke Peters. But the divine Philip Quast and the revelatory Denis Lawson made me weep buckets. Perhaps if I keep my fingers crossed, someone will ask Clarke Peters to play Georges and then he will make me cry. And then I'll be ridiculously creepy at the stage door at him. re: 10 Musicals

Who's your favourite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?
Ooh, tricky! Because there was an original cast *and* an original Broadway cast, and they were both amazing, so I can pick nearly anyone, I reckon! But it's gotta be Michael Cerveris or Neil Patrick Harris, obviously!

How many times have you seen 9?
On film, countless times. On stage, just once, at the Royal Albert Hall, with Daniel Dae Kim as the King, his fine Korean abs criminally covered by his costume. D:

Who's your favourite character from 2?
Benny. :3 I mean, I love 'em all, but Benny wins.

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
I have three different recordings (OBC, 2005 revival, OST), two DVDs (Hearn+Lansbury, movie), and the apron. Yes, the apron. I'm Just That Cool.

Is 8 by your favorite composer/lyricist?
Haha, yes it is. XD I worship Sondheim, but I love Adam Guettel. :3

Do you have a recording of every musical written by 1's composer?
Yes. WRITE FASTER, GUETTEL.

Could you recite all of the lyrics and dialogue from 6 by memory?
Mostly. I still fall down on Alexi Darling's contact details, and I don't suppose I ever knew the dialogue, but there's not a *lot* of dialogue, so I know pretty darn most of the show.

The first musical you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Jason Donovan. All the cool kids went to see it.

The first musical you saw on Broadway?
Rent. And unlike people who are ashamed of the fact they were ever 15, I'm pleased about it and proud to admit it.

The first musical you saw off-Broadway?
Well, I've never seen an off-Broadway musical. But my first off-West End musical was The Last Five Years. (HEY, DID YOU KNOW THERE'S A WEST END AS WELL AS A BROADWAY? 8D)

The musical got you into musical theatre?
Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and Wicked. Yeah, I went about it *that* way! And now look at me with my crazy Shakespeare lovin'! Living proof that you can outgrow being a teenybopper! XD

Your favourite composer?
Adam Guettel. I <3 him.

Your favourite musical from your favourite composer?
Floyd Collins. Not only is it completely amazing, I also get extra geek cred 'cos it's pretty obscure and it's got such bizarre-for-a-musical subject matter. XD

The musical with your favourite choreography?
Having two left feet, I'm never really aware of choreography. I mean, I get excited when War Horse and Black Watch beat out things like Hairspray to the Olivier awards. XD But I do find the In the Heights choreography somewhat on the breathtaking side, if that is an acceptable enough answer. (I know there will be dancers reading this. XD)

Ever left a musical at intermission?
Yes. Kismet. I usually won't, but I'd been having SUCH a lovely day, and I wasn't clicking with it at ALL, and Michael Ball doesn't really work for me if I can see and easily identify him, and the set was terrible, and my seat was really uncomfortable, so I snuck out with the smokers and went to eat okonomiyaki instead of sticking around. Go me!

Your all-time favourite song?
NO. I CAN'T DO THAT. You can name a musical and I can give you my favourite song from that musical. Hell, you can name a composer and I'll do my best to think of one individual song from that composer. But I cannot choose ONE song above ALL OTHER songs. For one thing, it changes every freakin' day. :P

Your all-time favourite lyric?
Does anyone *not* love "look, I made a hat; where there never was a hat"? Breathtaking in its simplicity, a perfect succinct explanation of the creation of art.

Your all-time favourite line of dialogue?
There's dialogue in musicals? 8D

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
Of course not! That's rude! I'm one of those people who dawdles in the auditorium and applauds the band one last time after the final play-out. :3

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
How cruel, that it has to be a musical. re: 10 Musicals I've genuinely thought about time travel, and I would genuinely go no further than 2004. I'm freakin' OBSESSED with the RSC 2004 production of Hamlet (Directed by Michael Boyd! Fights by Terry King! Cast includes Toby Stephens! Clive Wood! Sian Thomas! Forbes Masson! Richard Cordery! Greg Hicks! John Mackay! Gideon Turner!), and I wish more than anything I'd seen Journey's End in the West End (Geoffrey Streatfeild as Stanhope ffs!!!!!). But I guess a sizeable part of wanting to go back to 2004 is the amazing musical season that was going down on Broadway. Any year that presents Assassins, Avenue Q, The Boy from Oz, Caroline or Change, and Wicked is A-okay by me! I guess I'll go with Assassins. But I want it to be known that I'd rather be seeing Hamlet. :P

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
It's the modern equivalent of turning popular plays into musicals. If you can greet a My Fair Lady or a West Side Story with joy, then you can bloody well do the same to a Wedding Singer or a Billy Elliot. If you won't, your snobbery and double-standards are not welcome here!

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
There are three different sorts I can think of.
1. "Take a musical act, pick their best known songs, and try and weave a story around 'em".
Examples: Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You
Opinion: um... no. No thank you. Lame lame lame lame lame.

2. "Take a musical act, pick their best known songs, and write a play that involves them singing these songs."
Examples: Jersey Boys, Buddy
Opinion: acceptable logical behaviour. I still will not pay good money to see one.

3. "Work out your musical theme, get your story, shoehorn in as many different songs as you can from as many different musical acts as you need, and just have fun."
Examples: Priscilla, Rock of Ages
Opinion: yeah, I quite like these. I'd still rather see a play, but I'll see these ones as well. :3

Your favourite performance from this year's Tonys?
Next to Normal. I never really took to Alice Ripley, but it was a brilliant performance. I've quite come round. :3

3. Cabaret
4. Rent
5. Spring Awakening
6. Into the Woods
7. Sunday In the Park With George
8. Company
9. Avenue Q
10.Side Show

How did you hear about 7?
On my "Broadway: The American Musical" PBS dvd... it was one of their featured shows, after that I saw the OBC dvd, and saw a production this spring.

Would 4 make a good movie?
Been there, done that, it would have been fabulous if they kept all the songs (like Contact and all of Christmas Bells).

What's your favourite song from 10?
Probably "I Will Never Leave You", but "Who Will Love Me As I Am" is beautiful too!

Who's your favorite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?
OBC? Joel Grey... but if we count the revival, I am in love with Alan Cumming.

How many times have you seen 9?
Once, on B-way.

Who's your favorite character from 2?
So hard... probably Kate, but all the characters are so well developed, that Burrs and Queenie are close seconds.

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
Nothing... its sad, I know!

Is 8 by your favorite composer/lyricist?
Yep, I am a Sondheim girl at heart, but I love the up-and-comers like Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (of Next to Normal).

Do you have a recording of every musical written by 1's composer?
Well, Next to Normal was there first and only show so far, so yes!

Could you recite all of the lyrics and dialogue from 6 by memory?
Yes I can! "Once upon a time," "I wish" "In a far off kingdom" "More than anything"...

The first musical you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
A production of The Wizard of Oz with Eartha Kitt as the Wicked Witch of the West.

The first musical you saw on Broadway?
Next to Normal

The first musical you saw off-Broadway?
I don't think I've been technically off-Broadway... but my first Toronto show was Mama Mia. I know...

The musical got you into musical theatre?
Probably Annie, the movie version with Kristin Chenoweth as Lily
St. Regis and Alan Cumming as Rooster... those two stood out to me even when I was 3 or 4.

Your favorite composer?
Like many, Sonheim... but, like I said before, I loved the score of Next to Normal, and I'm looking forward to more Tom Kitt/ Brian Yorkey collaborations.

Your favorite musical from your favorite composer?
Oh jeeze, Into the Woods, Sunday In the Park..., and Company are a 3 way tie to me, because they show 3 different sides to Sondheim.

The musical with your favorite choreography?
I adore Fosse's work in Sweet Charity, as well as all of his work with Gwen Verdon, like Damn Yankees, Redhead, and Chicago.

Ever left a musical at intermission?
No, I almost did at Shrek and avoided even going to Dirty Dancing.

Your all-time favourite song?
Um.... "Maybe I Like It This Way" from Wild Party, or "Being Alive" from Company, "Move On" from Sunday..., or "Maybe (Next to Normal)" from Next to Normal... I can't choose!.

Your all-time favourite lyric?
Oh, I love: "Day after day, give me clouds and rain and grey. Give me pain, if that's what's real, its the price we pay to feel" from "Light" in Next to Normal

You're all-time favourite line of dialogue?
"Me, give me a bottle of bourbon and half a chicken and I'll conquer the world!"-Kate, The Wild Party

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
Gosh, no! I'm the person who stands for the ensemble and claps till you can no longer see any part of the actors.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast.
Um, possibly the OOBC of Lippa's Wild Party (to see Idina Menzel, Brian D'Arcy James, Taye Diggs, and Julia Murney all together would be amazing). Or Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters in Sunday... Or the 2000 revival cast of Rock Horror (to see Raul Esparza, Alice Ripley, and Daphne Rubin Vega in that show together would be amazing).

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
It depends... I like that they are bringing more people to Broadway, but I am not a fan of how cutesy and gimmick-y they are. I prefer a more original musical, a more intense or emotional musical.

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
Again, not a huge fan overall, but there are some that are effective.

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
Definitely Next to Normal.

Give me a bottle of bourbon and half a chicken and I'll conquer the world!

4. In the Heights
5. Hairspray
6. Gypsy
7. Mamma Mia!
8. Shrek
9. Avenue Q
10. Cats

How did you hear about 7?
I was a fan of ABBA, and I think my mom read about it somewhere.

Would 4 make a good movie?
If it was done right, why not?

What's your favorite song from 10?
Mr. Mistoffelees or the Overture.

Who's your favorite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?
Danielle Ferland

How many times have you seen 9?
Just once.

Who's your favorite character from 2?
It's too hard. I love all of them so much for different reasons.

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
Just the Original Broadway Cast Album, and a couple of things that have to do with the most recent movie, if that counts at all.

Is 8 by your favorite composer/lyricist?
Nope-I just like shows and the music because something catches my ears or the plot might sound interesting.

Do you have a recording of every musical written by 1's composer?
I'm going to say no, only because I'm not sure.

Could you recite all of the lyrics and dialogue from 6 by memory?
Only seeing it once, I'm going to say no.

The first musical you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
I think it was the local high school's production of My Fair Lady.

The first musical you saw on Broadway?
Mamma Mia!

The first musical you saw off-Broadway?
Forbidden Broadway Goes to Rehab

The musical got you into musical theatre?
Annie

Your favorite composer?
I don't have one because I rarely go into shows for that reason.

Your favorite musical from your favorite composer?
Again, I don't base my likes on this factor.

The musical with your favorite choreography?
I'm not sure. I guess maybe Chicago.

Ever left a musical at intermission?
Nope, and I don't plan to either, even if the show is really bad.

Your all-time favorite song?
Meadowlark from The Baker's Wife, which I can't find any information on, but I just like the song.

Your all-time favorite lyric?
I have no idea.

Your all-time favorite line of dialogue?
I have no idea again.

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
Nope

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
The original cast of Hairspray.

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
Some are good and some are bad, so it just depends if they work or not.

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
I would be lying if I said I didn't like them.

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
Either Next to Normal or Shrek.

3. Les Miserables
4. Mamma mia
5. RENT
6. Fiddler on the Roof
7. Avenue Q
8. The Beautiful Game
9. 1776
10. Into the Woods

How did you hear about 7?
I really didn't. I had a season subscription to Broadway across America and it was part of the package. I knew almost nothing about it, except that I had heard from other poeple that it was "like Sesame Street or the Muppets for adults" and had puppets in it. I wasn't sure I was going to like it because I thought it might be too juvenile or silly. But I went anyway, and loved it. I mean, "what do you do with a B.A. in English?". that is one of the world's most profound questions.

Would 4 make a good movie?
I'll have to say that it has been made into a very successful movie. One that my husband and I like very much.

What's your favorite song from 10?
There's a lot of good songs in this show, but I think "No one is alone" really has the most effect.

Who's your favorite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?
Don't laugh....but Terrence Mann and in the original London cast-Michael Ball.

How many times have you seen 9?
Haven't seen it on stage. It doens't get done that often, but I love the movie. It has one of the best scripts and scores of a show.

Who's your favorite character from 2?
I don't think there is a bad character in this show. (We could have a whole thread devoted to everyone's fave character from ACL) They are all so real and so different. I think you can identify with some aspect of every one of them, but I think I'd have to say Cassie. She pulls herelf up by her bootstraps, swallows her pride, admits her failures and works her butt off to be given another chance.

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
Not too much except cast album, movie soundtrack, film version and final Bway performance DVD.

Is 8 by your favorite composer/lyricist?
Yeah, I suppose I could say that Lloyd Webber is my favorite, based on the fact that I haven't come across a score of his that I didn't like.

Do you have a recording of every musical written by 1's composer?
The only two ALW shows that I don't have copies of are Whistle down the wind and The Woman in White.

Could you recite all of the lyrics and dialogue from 6 by memory?
It's been a while since I've heard Fiddler in its entireity, but yeah I do remember a good bit of it.

The first musical you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
The first live musical I saw was the national tour of Cats back in 1988.

The first musical you saw on Broadway?
A Chorus Line, back in 1989 before the original run closed.

The first musical you saw off-Broadway?
Haven't seen any off-Broadway ones. (I don't get to NY too often)

The musical got you into musical theatre?
I'd have to say the first one- Cats.

Your favorite composer?
Lloyd Webber was an easy first choice. But over the years, I came to enjoy the complexities of Sondheim a great deal.

Your favorite musical from your favorite composer?
My fave Lloyd Webber show tends to change all the time, so I guess I don't really have one.

The musical with your favorite choreography?
I do like the choreography for Chicago a lot, but I think A Chorus Line is my favorite. So much of the dancing captures what the show is all about.

Ever left a musical at intermission?
No, and I never would because I don't believe that you can form a complete opinion about something unless you see the whole performance. Some shows have a much better second act. You have to see the whole thing to give it a chance in my opinion.

Your all-time favorite song?
this may sound cheesy but "What I did for love" from ACL has always moved me. And it's not original (for the theater) but "Does your mother know" from Mamma mia is funny and has great beat.

Your all-time favorite lyric? I don't really have one. I think the most touching lyrics to me are the ones for the Life Support group in RENT: "will i lose my dignity? Will someone care? Will i wake tomorrow from this nightmare? I also like the sentiments about friendship expressed in "For Good" from Wicked and the line "no child was ever born to hate" from the finale of The Beautiful Game. But this one from 1776 has always made me laugh because it's so true:
A second flood, a simple famine
Plagues of locusts everywhere
Or a cataclysmic earthquake
I'd accept with some despair
But, no, you sent us Congress.
Good God, sir, was that fair?

Your all-time favorite line of dialogue?
Zach: Do you always come on like this?
Sheila: No. Sometimes I'm agressive.

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
Never, I think the actors deserve the applause. If they haven't given a great performance, I still applaud them anyway--it may not be their fault-the material they have to work with may suck, they may not be feeling well and sometimes it helps to make them feel better for the next performance.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
I would have liked to see one of the greats like Ethel Merman as Mama Rose or Carol Channing in Hello Dolly. If I have to pick one, I'd lean towards Ethel in Gypsy. Of course the opening night and original cast of A Chorus Line is so legendary, I would have liked to have seen that one too.

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
I thought it was good in the beginning, it helps get people who might not go to the theater to get interested. But now I am beginning to lament the dearth of original material. With this economy and the startup operating costs of a show being what they are, I can understand producers wanting to go with things that are tried and true. But for every Hollywood-to-Broadway remake we lose another show along the lines of A Chorus Line or Chicago.

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
The only ones that I have ever liked were Mamma mia and Lennon. Althought I have felt that at times, expecially in the former, certain songs were really shoehorned into the show and plot moments had to be devised just to cram another piece of the ABBA songbook into the show. But if they are done well they can be interesting. Like I thought Lennon was well done (but I am among the only 28 people in the world who evidently thought so).

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
I liked the Next to Normal bit. I knew nothing about the show, but it was intriguing enough that I want to see it now.

1. Spamalot
2. The Scarlet Pimpernel
3. Les Miserables
4. Ragtime
5. Fiddler on the Roof
6. Beauty and the Beast
7. Hairspray
8. Sweeney Todd
9. The Little Mermaid, tied with Evita
10. The Phantom of the Opera

How did you hear about 7?
I read an article about it in the newspaper when the musical was new, but I thought it sounded stupid and bizarre, having a man play one of the female leads. Then, the show choir at my school performed several songs and I really liked them, but it wasn?t until I learned that James Marsden was going to be in a film adaptation that I really got interested. And it didn?t become one of my favorites until Michael Ball was in the stage version and I got curious about the stage adaptation.

Would 4 make a good movie?
I know they made a movie of the original novel that it was based on, but I don?t think that the musical itself would make a good movie. Too disjointed to work on film.

What's your favorite song from 10?
?Notes/Prima Donna.? I think it?s gorgeous... but nobody understands me!

Who's your favorite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?
Original London: Michael Ball. Original Broadway: Terrence Mann. Well, that was easy.

How many times have you seen 9?
Little Mermaid--just once? not counting youtube. Evita?twice. Once was the National Tour at the Warner Theatre, once was with my lovely chorus teacher at a dinner theatre. Well, I?ve also seen the movie with Madonna, but that hardly counts.

Who's your favorite character from 2?
Ooh, well the obvious answer is Sir Percy Blakeney, because I AM him. But let?s be honest, Chauvelin?s pretty awesome, too.

What sort of merchandise do you have from 5?
About ninety eight thousand programs, because I?ve seen, I believe, fourteen productions of Fiddler. And it still never gets old?

Is 8 by your favorite composer/lyricist?
See, I know I should say ?yes,? because it?s Stephen Sondheim. And everyone knows that if you say anything other than ?Stephen Sondheim,? then you?re not a human being. And he IS my favorite lyricist, but my favorite composer is Alan Menken. Go ahead, throw me off a bridge, it?s still true.

Do you have a recording of every musical written by 1's composer?
I don?t think Eric Idle has written any other musicals.

Could you recite all of the lyrics and dialogue from 6 by memory?
Hahaha, almost all of it. I can recite the lyrics and lots of the dialogue, but honestly, I know the movie better than the stage show.

The first musical you ever saw live (or that you at least remember)?
Hmmm? I saw lots and lots of high school shows as a small child. I?m not sure. Basically ever since birth. I have vague memories of lots of them, but I have no idea what came first.

The first musical you saw on Broadway?
The Little Mermaid. As you can see, I'm a woman of exquisite taste... 0_o

The first musical you saw off-Broadway?
None, actually.

The musical got you into musical theatre?
Fiddler on the Roof, then CATS. And that introduced me to Terrence Mann, and after checking out the zillions of other shows he was in, I became a Broadway fan.

Your favorite composer?
Alan Menken

Your favorite musical from your favorite composer?
Good question. He?s my favorite because I like ALL of his work. I think my favorite is Beauty and the Beast. But my favorite movie that he?s done the score for is The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

The musical with your favorite choreography?
I?m going to reveal my ignorance and say ?CATS.?

Ever left a musical at intermission?
No, but the first time I saw ?Oliver!? I came in at intermission! That made for an interesting night.

Your all-time favorite song?
I?m not sure I have one. I?d say ?Into the Fire? from The Scarlet Pimpernel, but there are SO many songs that I love. ?Into the Fire? is just the one that makes me the happiest when I listen to it on a bad day. ?One Day More? from Les Miserables and ?Journey On? and ?Make Them Hear You? from Ragtime have the same effect? And does ?I?ll Make A Man Out Of You? from Mulan count?

Your all-time favorite lyric?
I think ?Finishing the Hat? from Sunday in the Park with George is the lyric I can best relate to? especially the last few lines.

Your all-time favorite line of dialogue?
Ooh, well there?s, ?Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries? from Spamalot, there?s ?If it?s not Baroque, don?t fix it? from Beauty and the Beast (it?s the delivery that makes it), and from A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, ?When they start to smile, the end is near. I hear it's lovely on Crete. Everyone lying there... smiling,? and SO MANY lines from My Fair Lady, Scarlet Pimpernel, and Fiddler on the Roof. But I think my all-around favorite line from any musical would have to be ?I?ll be in the drawwwwring room, painting a picture of the stupid expressions on your faces,? from A Very Potter Musical.

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
No, of course not! I?m the one jumping to my feet and screaming!

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
I?ll be boring and predictable pick the Original Broadway Cast of The Scarlet Pimpernel.

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
To quote Moulin Rouge (fittingly), ?Well, generally, I like it.? I don?t like all of the results?far from it?but movies are good sources to adapt into musicals and have a lot of potential. I just think they could sometimes choose better movies. But I like the Disney adaptations, and I like Shrek, and Hairspray, among a few others.

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
Not a fan. I feel like the storyline is always too tenuous.

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
I just said I hate jukebox musicals, but strangely, I loved Rock of Ages? performance. Maybe just because Don?t Stop Believing is one of my favorite songs. Next to Normal was absolutely brilliant, but obviously in a very different way!

How did you hear about 7?
I believe I either saw an ad for it or saw the album in the record store.

Would 4 make a good movie?
No. I don't think many musicals would transfer to the stage well.

"Class" or "Ten Percent", which was actually cut from the show out of town.

Who's your favorite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?

No, I don't have every Jule Styne musical, but I have every one by its lyricist, Stephen Sondheim.

Could you recite all of the lyrics and dialogue from 6 by memory?
Some of it.

Your favorite musical from your favorite composer?
Follies

The musical with your favorite choreography?
West Side Story

Yes

Your all-time favorite song?

"When I undertook this corespodence/Little did I know I'd grow so fond/Little did I know our views would so correspond."- "I Don't Know His Name", She Loves Me
or...

Your all-time favorite line of dialogue?
Sammie - The bitch ain't comin' (Wedding Singer)

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
No, and I hate it when people do. Very rude, even if the cast wasn't good.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
Follies- OBC.

How do you feel about the more recent trend of turning popular movies into musicals? (Ex: Shrek, Legally Blonde, Lion King, etc)
As long as it's done artfully. Unfortunately, the last one that I thought was done artfully was Dirty Rotten Scoundrels which was a whopping 4 seasons ago.

Your opinion on jukebox musicals?
Not a fan.

Your favorite performance from this year's Tonys?
Liza's, West Side Story's and the Next to Normal one was interesting.

Would 4 make a good movie?
Not at all.

What's your favorite song from 10?
"Heaven On Their Minds-" simply because it's the opening song and it really explores Judas' feelings towards Jesus.

Who's your favorite actor from the original cast (Broadway, London) of number 3?
No doubt in my mind: Mandy Gonzalez

Not really. Only a few songs.

The Sound Of Music. When I saw that onstage, I knew...Just simply knew that the stage was where I wanted to be.

Your favorite composer?
John Kander

Your favorite musical from your favorite composer?
Cabaret. John Kander's music is in another class of its own. Listen to Curtains or Chicago, if you don't believe me.

The musical with your favorite choreography?
West Side Story. Most of the numbers require so much energy, and Mr. Robbins Tony Award was well-deserved.

Ever left a musical at intermission?
Maybe once or twice. I don't like to leave, because sometimes they seem to start the show a few minutes ahead of schedule.

Your all-time favorite song?
"Notice Me, Horton"-from Seussical

Your all-time favorite lyric?
"Although storms may descend, mountain and valley may quake/For the days that remain, this is the promise I make/No shadow fall across this land, before the wind and fire I stand, and you my child will know no harm, enfolded in my arms/ Lothlorien!"

Are you one of those people who leave in the middle of a curtain call?
No, I hate people who do that. A musical is not over until the curtain falls, the lights come up, and you hear the last note from the orchestra.

You're given a chance to go back in time. The only catch is that all you can do is see a musical - any time, any where, any cast. As long as it actually happened.
