I can't even imagine a small show like Peter and the Starcatcher going into most mega theatre tour venues. Any charm this piece has will be lost in these barn like theatres.

Who says that's how it will tour? Many markets use smaller venues for smaller shows (Dallas sometimes uses the Wyly or Majestic, Seattle sometimes uses the Moore, etc).

Plus, like XANADU and ALTAR BOYZ before it, they may expand slightly on the physical design to fill those bigger stages and the show will tour just fine.

Wow. Seeing these lists make me even more grateful that I'm a season ticketholder this year for Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo. We've already had JEKYLL & HYDE this season with BOOK OF MORMAN, PRISCILLA and SISTER ACT all still to come by this June...along with JERSEY BOYS (again) and ROCK OF AGES.

Next season is already looking to be a bit of a letdown. If WICKED, THE LION KING or MAMMA MIA! come back (AGAIN), I think I'll scream. A NEWSIES tour would rock.

Slim pickings this year. I have already seen the most of the standard blockbuster shows touring. I hope Peter and the Star Catcher makes it to Seattle soon. I wish Bonnie & Clyde did well enough on Broadway to have a tour.

I'm surprised that we didn't get some mage super hit for the summer. It seems like we always get a family friendly show that runs 4-5 weeks in the summer. Maybe they decided to let Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) do a show like that for 2013-14? TUTS has yet to announce. They plan on announcing around mid-February.

Also, I would have rather had EVITA than CHICAGO. I was not impressed with CHICAGO on its last tour through the city. I found that I enjoyed the film far better than that monochromatic and mostly dance-less production. Really, "Cell Block Tango" and "When You're Good to Momma" sung on stools with relatively no movement. C'mon folks! People saw the movie and expect more from those numbers.

Well, I see things differently. I, on the other hand, very much enjoyed "Chicago" when it played Houston in June 2011. As a matter of fact, I saw the Fort Worth show on one weekend and saw it again in Houston the following weekend. Terra C (Velma) and Tracy Shayne(Roxie) were awesome!! While it is true that "Chicago" doesn't have the color, sparkle and complexity that others show have, many people like that. That is one reason why "Chicago" has seen many, many, many musicals come and go in its 15 year run. Honestly, I wasn't too impressed with the movie. I had hoped for more of the quintessential Fosse choreography. Also, a few of the leads were lacking in their singing parts: Renee Zellweiger, Richard Gere...cough, cough (the Russell Crowe of the Chicago film). CZJ sang very well. The "Chicago" film was an interpretation of the musical, not the other way around. "Chicago" had been on Broadway roughly five years or so when the movie came about.
Monochromatic? Of course "Chicago" is mostly black (a color that never goes out of style.) It's the signature color of the show: the costumes, the stage, the orchestra area, etc. (Actually, there is some color: the sparkly curtain.) Monochromatic black is what makes "Chicago" special. Also, films lend themselves to color. Color is expected in films. It would have been weird to have had a black and white Chicago film. The monochromatic approach works well ...on the stage.
"DANCELESS"! Saying "Chicago" is dance-less is like saying the Newsies boys have no energy. Clarke. "Chicago" the musical has the Bob Fosse/Ann Reinking choreography in many areas: the opening sequence, All That Jazz, the extended Roxie sequence, Me and My Baby, Nowadays, Hot Honey Rag...and more. Bob Fosse's choreography is fantastic in its simplicity. The ladies and men of "Chicago" dance their friggin' behinds off every single night. "Cell Block Tango" involves stools, but the ladies dance around them and on them. There is significant choreography involved in that. "When You're Good To Mama" is not sung while sitting on a stool. It is a solo song performed by Matron Mama Morton. There is limited movement, which is understandable considering that Mama Morton is not a dancing type to begin with. One of the other songs that is sung on stools is "Class" (Mama and Velma). That is a duet and does not need much movement.
Now that I recall, Deidre Goodwin ("Chicago" Velma) was one of the dancers in the film. She was fab in "Every Little Step." So at least there was one "Chicago" dancer in the film. As I mentioned before, when people saw the movie... I and perhaps others expected more elements from the Broadway show. It makes very little sense to say that having seen the movie, people expected more from the musical. The show was already established to begin with.
I too am looking forward to seeing "Evita" when it tours. I loved seeing "Evita" in its first preview. Hopefully, Max Von Essen will tour as "Magaldi" or "Che". It has been my dream to have "Chicago" tour in Austin. You cannot imagine the sheer happiness that I felt when I got the news. I cannot wait!

Looks like the new tour of Phantom of the opera is coming to the US. It's now listed in cinncinatis 13/14 season.

I've never seen "Phantom" and have always been really reluctant to see it. One reason is that I'm afraid that the music will be so loud, that it will give me a major migraine. I'm sensitive to loudness. What makes Phantom such a special show? just wondering....from RC in Austin, TExas

DEClarke - Evita is one of the TUTS shows for next season (apparently a tour of the current Bway revival from what they told me).

The other 5 TUTS shows, according to what I've been told, are 4 shows they've NEVER done before and 1 they have. Supposed to be announced on 2/15.

Both of the houses in Seattle (the Paramount with thier "Broadway in Seattle" series, and the 5th Avenue Theatre) has not yet announced their seasons (I'm still anxiously awaiting). But the 5th Avenue did send out an early subscriber renewal form and let out that "Porgy and Bess" would be arriving.

I'm still hoping that "Anything Goes" (with Rachel York) will arrive here. And "Evita" would be nice too. With Max von Essen promoted to Che.

I didn't see CHICAGO in 2011. I thought the last time it was in town was like 2006-ish. I think that is when i saw it. I think TUTS was bringing it in then. And that production was more or less dance-less. I was highly disappointed.

If what I see next season has dancing in it and I know going into it that it will be devoid of color, I'll probably like it. I love the movie. And I just don't think it is too much to possibly mimic the "Cell Block Tango" from the film in a staged way. I would have loved to see that red back drop with the silhouettes dancing in cells on stage. The band doesn't really need to be on stage. it limits the space too much. However, it did make for an interesting way of staging the courtroom scene.

I can't say that I've ever noticed that Phantom is any louder than any other show out there. A few moments, such as those first shock chords of the Overture and the title song, are a bit louder, as expected, but every time I've seen the show I've actually been rather impressed at how well it's been mixed, especially since the new sound system went in a few years ago.

No. It's the same re-staging as the UK tour, but it's not the UK tour. It's a new US tour.
