The Kristin Chenoweth level? You mean the level that, while still devout in ones beliefs, one realizes that the Good Book need not always be taken at immediate face value, and that the message of compassion towards all regardless of race, sex, creed or orientation is FAR more important than a minor Deuteronomic code against men lying with men (whatever that even MEANS)?

God bless him if he makes it to that level- so few do.

Pluck the Jesus material out of the Bible and focus on it and you've got a fabulous teaching text about how to live a beautiful life.

Funny how so many people who use the phrase 'What Would Jesus Do' seem to have no idea.

As for Hunter? He's a kid who's getting very famous. It screws everybody up for a while. Stay tuned.

I don't subscribe to Parrish's religious beliefs, but I don't understand the extreme negative reaction here. It seems he wasn't asked to define why he thinks his God would disapprove of Weeds or what that God would think of Spring Awakening.

Is it righteous to have mixed feelings about past choices?

No, but it's sanctimonious BS when you talk about how God doesn't like the "Weeds" path, a choice Parrish made when he was not as spiritually "mature" as he is now, but then to go back to the show and collect a paycheck for it. THAT is where he totally lost me and why I brought it up in the thread. Alack, alas for him...

Fine FN, but at least he discusses the contradiction of taking a paycheck for work he now questions. We also don't know whether he had these problems with the show when he signed his last contract. None of this may be enough to keep him from being a hypocrite, but - for me - I'd want to hear more before judging him so completely.

Well, he doesn't seem to know much about the things he gets himself into. Arguing about the Judas kiss in Godspell? An argument he thought he had a chance of winning? What I'm saying is, it all adds up to a sanctimonious fella who doesn't seem too bright.

Maybe Silas was the one who got shot at the end of last season!

Honestly, I don't really care. As interviews go, it was pretty piss poor anyway. Even Pgenre gives his interviewees more e-ink!

It would make sense for Parrish to leave Godspell to go back to shoot a show he no longer has a part in. You know, cuz he seems so on top of things.

I would consider myself a liberal Christian too, so don't fit into your "atheists and agnostics around here" tag - and I too find what he said to be ludicrous.

Perhaps if he had actually become a real life weed-dealer, and not just played one of TV, I could maybe see his point...but um, surely he realizes he is acting, y'know...pretend.

Is Anthony Hopkins going to hell for playing Hannibal Lecter?

When I was teaching, the kids would say that so-and-so was a "hater".

I think I have to apply that name to Namo. The question is why is he so full of hatred?

I don't get sanctimony, stupidity, or ridiculousness from anything he says. He speaks with humility. He applies a code he tries to live by to the work he does, but honors the work and knows his place. A director wants him to do something - he questions it when he fears it's going against that code, which is his right - then does what the director decides, with commitment.
Why is it ludicrous to think any project to which you contribute should support the principles by which you try to live? We don't know the specifics of why he thinks Weeds may be destructive, but we also don't know whether he was asked or whether he listed them but they weren't included.
It's easy to put people down for trying to live by their beliefs. It's too easy.

Oh please...

If there was a god, then that god gave him the show. Right?! Because god must surely provide everything, and not just the things that sound all holy.

Its a pile of crap.

The kid made a ton of money from Weeds, so he should just shut up and be thankful that he's taken care of.

And it's not hate at all, it's the exasperation of hearing someone be ungrateful for what he has been given.

TheatreDiva, if I were the guy I wouldn't have said anything in the press that sounded at all negative about my job but Parrish brought up your points about the paycheck and god's plan. So why is what he's saying a pile of crap besides the fact that you don't agree with it?

If I were the producers of Weeds, I would be furious at him for bad-mouthing the show and furious at BroadwayWorld for publishing the interview.

Furthermore, I would fire the PR person who allowed it to happen.

I have to chime in that the only thing I fault Parrish for is speaking of his employers in a negative light in an interview. It's very unprofessional. In regards to how he FEELS, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I'm not very religious myself, but I've known enough people who are to understand why his religion might make him feel sinful or morally irresponsible for doing Weeds. I personally don't believe that God gives as much of a sh*t as Parrish thinks he does, but that's just how *I* feel.

Tolerance has to go both ways. If you want conservative religious people to be respectful towards you, you've got to do the same.

I have no qualms with an actor saying, "You know, I just don't feel morally right doing this part. Thanks you so much for the opportunity, but I'm going to decline." In fact, I would applaud them.

But Parrish, whose work I do enjoy and had no issue with him before, gives this bizarre statement about how it wasn't probably God's choice or what God wanted, but that it pays the bills, but that God led him to do Godspell, but that he will probably realize God didn't like that he did Weeds, and so forth. He gives contradictory statements, logically and spiritually, in order to reconcile his career with his beliefs and it doesn't jive for me.

^^^ What Kad said. Which is where I came in.

And Dollypop, I actually thought it was a well put together interview. Your work is like comfort food. You know exactly what you're going to get when you sit down to read it. You and a charming, attractive male performer have a conversation that in many ways feels special compared to all the other interviews you've seen with this charming, attractive male performer.

I like that you go out of your way not to do a simple Q and A in a simple Q and A format. I appreciate that.

Personally, I'm sorry that we live in such an infantilizing culture that a 24 year old who has played the lead in two Broadway shows can be considered "just a kid."
