I am thinking of collecting Broadway posters, the 14x22 ones. I am not looking for rare ones or even hard to find ones. How successful will I be finding them at the street fair? Also what can I expect the price range to be? Is there anything I should know before jumping in on collecting?
Now for framing, this seems to be expensive, any advise on where to shop for frames?
You can get posters for $10-15, sometimes less at the end of the day at the flea market. Triton Gallery usually has frames onsale as well, I think for $30 or $40?
When people say 'posters' I think they refer to the thin sheets of paper that movie posters are typically printed onto. By saying 'window card' you're referring to the heavy card stock that Broadway shows use. Window card (or I've heard some people call it a 'Show Card') is the more appropriate term. There is always one booth at the Flea Market that has a long, bare table and they sell all sorts of window cards for $10 each and, for added cost, they will frame them right there if that's what you want.
"Mostly, I loved the size of these people's emotions. Nobody has emotions this size anymore. Outsized emotions. Operatic emotions. Kushemski and Vanda are like Tristan and Isolde, they're Paolo and Francesca. Nobody's in total thrall like this anymore. Nobody's overcome by passion like this, or goes through this kind of rage." Thomas, Venus in Fur
I understand the distinction, I got poster from Playbill.com and my subsequent looking on ebay. Is there anything else I need to know about them? Is there one company that prints them, are there fakes or phonies out there? I just want to go into this knowing what I need to know.
Triton Gallery always has a rack of cheaper window cards for sale at the BC/EFA Flea Market. Other tables will also be selling them and many will have autographs and go for a lot of money. Still, there are many to be bought throughout the street fair, but check the Triton rack first.
Thanks everyone for sharing. You say Triton has a rack of cheaper window cards. By cheaper are you talking price or quality?
I guess what I am asking is is there a difference in quality? If I wanted to by a Wicked window card and I found several will there be any difference between them
Sometimes you can get the frames for a cheaper price at random tables. I think I got one for $10 one year. They will be used and you will have to do the framing yourself. But, you won't have to pay $25-$30 for a frame then. But, there is no guarantee you will get the number of frames you want by doing that.
