"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
I adored it. The kids were absolutely brilliant (I KNOW we will be seeing Presley Ryan WAY WAY WAY more in the future).
The set design was awesome. Mara Davi (Bertie) and Alysha Umphress (Cee Cee) were fantastic. I was a little wary of Alysha in the first act because she seemed like she wasn't "there", if that makes sense? She was a little aloof, but her voice was strong and clear and I really fell in love with her character. Mara was great and reminded me a LOT of Barbara Hershey from the film version (which is also funny because she's only seen the film once). I wish there was more chemistry between the two girls and I wish the first Act wasn't quite as fast-paced, BUT the second Act was absolutely perfect. I didn't cry, but my friend was crying the entire last twenty minutes of the show (it's usually reverse, but they didn't dive into the characterizations as much as other shows so I never felt too connected with them).
Overall, I really really liked this production, and I do hope it goes on to bigger things! The lyrics to the songs were really beautiful and the comedy bits were perfect. I'm awful at describing shows, sorry!
