I was listening to my iPod on shuffle, where it just plays random songs. All of a sudden 'Not While I'm Around (reprise) ' comes on. If you'll recall, at the beginning of that song on the OBCR, there is a portion of 'The Ballad of Sweeney Todd' and the whsitle whistles. I am the only one in the house awake and it gave me such chills and scared the crap out of me.

I am just always amazed at the emotion and feelings this musical can so quickly conjure up.

I agree. Such a quick chill.

How come the other Sondheim shows get no love? How about A Little Night Music? Sunday in the Park..? Follies? Company? Passion? Merriy... ? etc... re: WARNING: Do not enter if You're sick of my endless talk about Sweeney Todd

But back to your topic: I never put Sweeney Todd on a "shuffle list". Tried it once, the volume was on really loud, and the whistle almost gave me a heart attack. Updated On: 8/29/04 at 06:00 AM

That whistle has scared me to death more than once, along with some gunshots in "Assassins", this stuff is not meant for casual listening I guess.

And as long as we're talking about "Not While I'm Around", can I just say that I LOVE that song, and would really like to sing it at an audition if I could only hit that danm "but in time" part. Argh!

ALRIGHT! let's talk about another Sondheim show then.
Not Assassins, not Sweeney...
those have been discussed of late.
So what shall it be?
I am game for anything.

No, I want to talk about SWEENEY!!! I took Priest's advice and watched it for the first time the other day and loved it!

Sweeney is a GREAT show - not a light and fluffy one, to be sure, but something you can really chew on - pun intended.

The first time I listened to SWEENEY was on the way back from the Library and I put it in and turned it up because I couldn't really hear anything, and then all of a sudden there was a WHISTLE!!!!!!! My car went off the road because it freaked me out so much. I had to turn off the radio for a few minutes to get my heart beat back to normal.

I tell you, that whistle is just so effective at scaring the crap out of someone. Whoever's idea it was is brilliant for thinking of it. Whether it be Sondheim, Prince, Tunick or whoever.

Oh! And Matt_G, which video did you watch? The Hearn/Lansbury version of the show on braodway, or the Hearn/LuPone concert version? I'd suggest watching the concert as well, if you have not already, Patti LuPone's Nellie Lovett is fantastic! A very different take on the character, and beautifully sung!

I watched Lansbury. And I've got to tell you that I'm pissed at myself for not watching this years ago. With everything that I've seen in my life this is one that for one reason or another I've just put off. But she was remarkable. That's the only word I can use.

I love Lansbury. She is an AWESOME lovett and I watched the original MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE last week and she was so freaky and amazing that I fell in love with her as an actress all over again.

She is remarkable, I just saw it the first time a few days ago. But I also reccomend the concert, it will give you even more appreciation for the score, and if you are a LuPone fan, you can't miss!

I agree about Lansbury...Sweeney is actually the only ting I've seen her in, but she really is remarkable in it.

Then you should definitely watch the original Manchurian Candidate. Brr.

For a woman who's played such warm, motherly parts like Mrs. Potts, she's great at playing horrible amoral harpies. But that's talent for you.

I'd like everyone's opinions on this, 'cause I'm not sure what I think.

Who was the better Toby, Ken Jennings or Neil Patrick Harris?

Also, do you like the 'and in time' line more "belty" like Jennings or more "falsetto" like NPH?

Check out Lansbury in the Judy Garland musical The Harvey Girls. She looks great - but for some reason they decided not to use her voice in it so she lip syncs the songs. Very odd.

Anyone Can Whistle was Lansbury's first musical- I don't think she sang before that. Since that show was in 1964 and The Harvey Girls came out in 1946, I think you have your explanation right there.

Plum, I believe she was using her own voice in the '46 Till The Clouds Roll By ...
