Sweeney Todd (1979) is a contemporary work, somewhere between opera and musical. Composer Stephen Sondheim and librettist Hugh Wheeler reworked the famous urban legend “The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” to transform it into a funny and slightly horrible opera about revenge. Behind the tragic love story one finds some moral questions on the dark logic of capitalism and the razor edge boundary between life and death.
The composer famously said that the work "is a musical when presented as a musical, and an opera, when produced by an opera house."
