‘Music is a labyrinth one can enter and leave over and over again, always discovering new directions, yet one can never fathom its mystery.’ Pierre Boulez’ characterisation of music is especially applicable to the 20th century when an abundance of styles and aesthetic visions yielded an enormously varied range of masterpieces. Alain Altinoglu has selected three: Ravel’s impressionistic ballet music for Daphnis et Chloé, composed for the Ballets Russes shortly before World War I, Bartók’s poetic 1930 Cantata profana, an ode to nature and humanity that reflects his highly personal credo of fraternity and world peace, and Ligeti’s postmodern 1970 Chamber Concerto, with its restrained intensity and virtuosity, rediscovered simplicity, and consonance. For those who may still have cold feet when it comes to 20th-century music, this concert is an ideal way to discover its beauty.
